My Husband's Stupid Record Collection

Posted by: Redmires on 05 May 2014

A blog where a wife endeavours to listen to every one of her husbands 1500 LP collection, from A - Z.

Up to "B" at the moment, just past Black Sabbath.

Absolutely incomprehensible.

Listen to LPs intently without the depressingly pressing need to act in a fitful reality diversion maneuvre.

Patiently waiting on the husbands blog, my wife's stupid shoe collection.  Trying them on from low heeled to high.

OK, maybe not.

Actually finding it quite interesting, now I've worked out how to navigate the page/site whatever they are called.

Its a LOT more interesting than the "what are you listening to..." thread on this site where no-one even tries to bother to engage by suggesting why anyone would be interested, as the title urges.

I wonder if anyone here is brave enough to give up their listening time to their partner's collection?

I thought it was fun and may check it out occasionally to find out how she's getting on.

Give her credit for wading into a massive project and to understand more about his passion.

George, good to see you back, I had quite a period away myself.  Just cleaned my reduced classical LPs. I kept my Brahms, Mahler, Shotakovich. Lets have a chat, mudwolf53@me.com.

Dear god! The last thing I need is my wife touching my LPs, or worse yet, attempting to cue them on my TT.

I wouldn't dare think of thumbing through her stack of magazines or using her hair products.

This flies in the face of matrimonial decorum .

The wife once started going through my cd collection whilst off work for a long period of time. Not sure where she got to but I managed to convert her to the dark side (Nick Cave etc etc) but she still hankers after Richard airbrushed Clayderman.

However I couldn't imagine her listening to all the blues albums I have.

She still tells me that there is no way I can listen to all the music I have in my collection before I push up daisies (she is right of course but I ain't ever going to admit it).

Well, I'm a bachelor at 60 so I don't understand all those touchy issues.

I would say now that I've finished a massive LP reduction, cleaning, organizing effort that having someone not put things in the right order or category would be irritating. I've found my hobby to be solo experience, friends don't have time to listen to albums or they want to talk about other things.

One friend is 70 and loved to close his eyes and let the music flow on a Sunday afternoon. He loves my newish jazz collection of the greats which he grew up with more than I did.  When friends say they have the best music and home theater system he  pays attention. But he says I have it way better than anything else he's experienced.  I wonder why?  LOL

Found this to be a really useful blog! It's making me revisit a lot of my records and listening to all of the record not just a side or selected tracks. Particularly resonated with the Black Sabbath Paranoid album and the way the tracks are set out.

Waiting for some new and interesting discoveries as well. Thanks to the forum I am now a Bill Evans convert and have 3 CD's of the Village Vanguard Sessions which are wonderful.

Mudwolf, "all those touchy issues" are just male Forum members pretending to wear the trousers in their marriage, but in reality they would love their wives to express a similar interest in their record collectionS.

Frankly, I am impressed with this woman that she is actually attempting it. Potentially, it must be one of the most tedious and torturous exercises devised for any loving relationship. Personally, I could not do it, but perhaps they will learn something new about each other if they engage in a dialogue about 'the music' she hears.

Having said that, the fact that she is 'blogging' about her experience is probably affecting her reaction. Can you imagine feeling forced to continue to listen to your partners music collection when you really hate it...but feel obliged to complete it because you are blogging about it, or should that be 'blagging' it.

I fear for her future well being.
