Lily Allen - Sheezus ripping problems

Posted by: james n on 07 May 2014

Just curious if anyone has had any problems ripping this album - XLD won't do it and iTunes is ripping it, albeit slowly. No mention of copy protection ?

Lily Allen? Are you trying to be down with the kids? The clever software is simply protecting you. If you get out a Smiths cd it will rip happily.

I suspect you're much closer to retirement than me Nigel but good idea with the Smiths - not listened to them in ages.

I've tried two copies of Dig, Lazarus, Dig by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and the UnitiServe is having none of it. It's bloody annoying, and I can quite see why the inability of listening to Lily is irritating.

Nick Cave is clearly old git's music......

Can you guys play these CD's on your computer?  Does it sound normal or does it have sound distortion?  If it sounds normal on a CD player and distorted on a computer it may be copy protection.

One such copy protection is SafeAudio...

Protection Info: SAFEAUDIO v3 "SafeAudio changes the music data at the bit level, flipping a fraction of a disc's billions of 1s and to 0s. That "very subtle" degree of data corruption, while enough to block an attempt to copy a track onto a hard drive, won't affect the quality of the playback or affect the disc's physical playability. The noise induced by dirt and scratches easily drowns out the noise inherent in the copy-protected data."

Anything with copy protection doesn't conform to the Red Book and Philips wont allow them to use the Compact Disc Digital Audio logo.

If one looks in the usual places, it seems clear that some folks have managed to rip this to flac, mp3, etc.  If I bought it, and could not rip it myself, I'd not feel too bad obtaining it from such a place.

James, I have just ordered the CD second hand. I'll let you know how I get on ripping it with dbpoweramp once it arrives. However of my 1100 or so CDs I have only had one or two ripping failures and that has been because of obvious physical damage. It'll be interesting to see what happens here.

Nigel, my copy of Dig, Lazuras, Dig ripped fine on the Unitiserve.

Copying the CD and ripping the copy worked for me on my issues with Wombats CD.  I also finally got it to rip in dbpoweramp - albeit at 0.1x speed!  (I haven't listened to these files yet, though).

Thanks all - plays fine, both in the car and on the computer. ITunes ripped it but XLD hangs after doing the pre gap run. Normally it's very good and after nearly 2000 CDs now only 4 won't rip (Blue Nile High, Kraftwerk Min / Max and this one).

I'll be interested in how you get on Simon.

CD arrived and ripped fine on dBpoweramp at about 20x read speed. Interestingly there was no AccurateRIp checksum to compare to - and therefore dBpoweramp did a two pass cross check and all was fine.

I now have a UnitiServe rip on a memory stick, all the way from the sunny IoW. Now, do it put the files in the Serve's MQ folder or the downloads folder? Hmmm.....

I don't think you have any option apart from the Downloads folder. I don't think it's possible to add to the MQ folder unless it's been ripped by the Unitiserve. I may be wrong, but I think that's how it is with my NS01.

BTW I have about 30 CDs which failed to rip (either not at all or on a few tracks). I haven't tried copying the discs on my PC then ripping the copy. I must have a go at that.

That's my hunch too, but given that it was ripped on a UnitiServe, albeit not mine, I was wondering if it might be ok. And should anyone ask, I have the Cd of this album, so it's all legal and above board.

Just in case it helps anyone, I had seven CDs that wouldn't rip on my 3 year old Asus laptop, Win 7 with a blu-ray drive. A couple of the CDs weren't even recognised by Windows, i.e. it didn't even know there was a disc in the drive.

I then had the idea of trying them on an old laptop that is still around, a Sony Vaio running Win 2000 believe it or not, and every single one ripped successfully. It took forever, and twice forever to write the files to  memory stick, but at least it worked.

Nigel,

I think it will work fine straight into the Userve's MQ folder, but you could create a new music store elsewhere on your network and then use 'move music ' to transfer it to your to your Unitiserve folder.
