Nstream random play question

Posted by: Niko08 on 09 May 2014

Have all albums ripped to NAS using NStream to control music into NDX. I can load music into fav folders but wish to random play from all albums if possible but not yet worked out, assuming it can be done but not figured yet?

I'm using Asset on my nas and there is a album jukebox and track jukebox feature

I use MediaMonkey to organise music. I have it set so that when it closes it updates all playlists on my NAS. One of these is a random set of 100 tracks taken from all tracks that it knows about. A second is a random set of 100 tracks with a timestamp in the last 60 days. I can then access the playlists from any streaming software. It works perfectly.

Hi, NStream can't play completely random files, but it can randomise a playlist.

if you want genuinely random files the only way I have found, as mentioned above, is to use a function within the UPnP/DLNA app such as Asset.

Asset when doing this automatically creates a random playlist, which NStream can navigate to and then play through..

Having read this and the link topic above, I have just done as Simon has highlighted and found the tips really useful. Just two questions 1) is it n stream, asset or my N172 that limits the tracks to 500 and 2) is ether a user manual for n stream.

All the best

Main point of the linked thread I posted above is that it tells how you can do it just on the remote - no Nstream involvement or settings in upnp players.

PG, it's the streamer board memory that ultimately limits the playlist size. When the streaming boards were upgraded to support 24/192 then the playlist memory I believe was doubled... At least for the NDX.

With Naim, the playlist is loaded into the network player, and it is this that pulls back the media from the UPnP/DLNA server. You see this loading process when you load a very large playlist, and you see a green progress bar as the list is transferred from NStream to the player.

Pev, I can't get your method to work for me, only the same subset of albums are selected for the random playlist.. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

Many thanks Simon. With using the nstream route and asset I get a different selection of tracks each time. Whereas when I was using the remote and twonky it would always start with the same track and the same tracks seemed to be in the mix, so the nstream/asset way really mixes things up, which is what I was after. Thank. PG

Naim streamer via the N-Stream app is limited to 500 tracks.  The best way to get the most random 500 using N-Stream is by long pressing the 'items' entry just below the 'albums' entry.  It's still not great though.

Hi Simon,

Using the remote (I have a Superuniti) I select upnp; then Asset; then artist/album; then all artists; then press play; then press random. The first track is always the same but press next and you're away!

Just checked and it still works for me (mostly listening to Quobuz these days )

cheers
