NDX not Connecting

Posted by: Camlan on 11 May 2014

Hi guys, some help please.

Had an NDX about 3 weeks now and all of a sudden, mid album, it is not 'connecting'. If I use the handset instead Nstream it shows all the music on my Unitiserve as does Nstream but will not connect to play it. Nstream and the display is just showing Connecting..but nothing is happening. WiFi feed is via an Airport Express and that all seems OK. I have rebooted the NDX and the WiFi and still no luck.

Any ideas?

Try going into settings (the spanner) then network settings. Sometimes this can give the streamer a kick start to connect to the network without having to switch it off and on again.

Yes thanks. I've tried that without success. It's showing as connected. I've also tried a reboot with no joy.

OK success. For future reference I disconnected from the WiFi Network and reconnected and that worked.

Can't say I'm tremendously impressed though. This is another of a few minor un Naim like niggles particularly with Nstream.

Wifi is notorious for being notorious.
My advice (fwiw) - DON'T use wifi unless you've got a good sense of humour

I'm going to need a hell of a sense of humour to hard wire Nstream!!

I may be wrong but I get the impression that this streaming is something of a work in progress and whilst I appreciate the convenience and the SQ, it seems to have it's issues.

Camlan,  what exactly is your set-up ?

How far is the distance from your NDX to Airport Express

How far (how long is the Ethernet) from Airport Express to the UnitiServe.

But whatever I don’t think anyone will prefer wireless to make the HDX connection as it adds another level of  possible stability issues.    & that includes Naim.

Hi Mike

NDX to Airport Express is c10m. Cable from Airport Express to UnitiServe is 0.5m Chord.

I am thinking of cabling the NDX connection but am slightly concerned about some of the issues mentioned on here with Internet Radio.

FWIW I think Phil's comments only underline what I said about 'work in progress', to offer the product with a WiFi capability and then say but I wouldn't use that is somewhat disingenuous in my view.

Hi again Camlan,  I agree the inclusion of wifi is a little questionable as an optional method of connection together with ethernet, some caveats about its use might be appropriate. It’s great for working the iPad & doing stuff from your PC/Laptop, but as a connection for transmitting your music files it falls short.

I don’t understand what you mean about concerned about issues “mentioned on here” with Internet Radio.

With an ethernet cable from the NDX - via a switch - to the UnitiServe & an ethernet cable branch off the switch to the broadband/internet router, there should not be a problem. If the iRadio signal is dodgy as in broadband drop outs, it will not affect the connection to the NDX.

I don't believe any of those problems are caused by correctly wired Ethernet.

Overly complicated, bad or incorrectly applied or overloaded routers/switches/cables, actual iRadio signal & buffering issues (such as we've seen over the last week or so on some stations) or something else might cause drop outs,  but correctly wired ethernet - no.

I've got to say I probably agree. Anyway engineer is coming tomorrow to fit ethernet cable so we will soon find out. If worst comes to worst I can always revert to WiFI for radio listening.

My original intention was to cable the NDX directly to the Airport Express along with the UnitiServe, I have a spare socket. Is this not the best solution?

I originally tried connecting it all thru my 4 port broadband router,  it worked fine at first, I listened a number of times but only for 1 or 2 CD length recordings.  Then I had a 3+ hour listening session (NAS) & it started to loose wifi. Not a prob for the NAS-NDX connection, but nStream was in bits.  The Router Hub was really hot & obviously protesting about the traffic it was handling.

After a think about it, I diagnosed the router not able to handle the traffic & bought an unmanaged GigBit handling switch.  15 minutes to rewire & find a new home for the router, all plug 'n play straight out of the box.  The new switch is not getting the slightest bit warm & the wifi router is now a happy bunny.

Attached is a diagram of my set up

If I was adding other stuff like a Games or PC/printer or another NAS net,  I would install another switch centered on the non-hifi stuff & run a link branch between that net & the hifi net.

OK Mike, Thanks. I'll give that a go when I get the chance to go and buy a switch.

Same set up as mine and works perfectly

I just started having a similar issue. Had my set up for 2 years or more, all hard wired  - NDX, UServe - and no problem but just started having issues.  Now cannot get a UPNP or iRadio connection at all. I just get a message "connecting" and then it quits with no connection. Very frustrating and knowing nothing has Changed over 2 years, what now? Any guidance would be much appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

I should say say I have done the standard troubleshooting - restarted everything down to the router. No difference. The UServe does burn discs however to NAS no problem.

Have you tried changing the cable from the Router to the NDX, it may have deteriorated or been damaged. Alternatively try WiFi and see if it works on that, would at least narrow down the problem.

No, and great point.

BINGO!   Not surprising it's the weakest link that failed. Just changing the slot used in the router was all it took. Thanks!
