Minim Server and Streamer

Posted by: Professor Fink on 11 May 2014

Hello everyone

I'm struggling with this... I've loaded Minim Server to my Synology DS214Play which is running wired to my network and UnitiQute2.

I want to try and use this software and transcode on the fly using the Minim Streamer.

I've double clicked the Minim Server Icon and go to a screen where called Minim Server Status where I've set the content directory... if I'm honest I can't work out how to get beyond that! The user guide does not have screen shots :-(

Any guidance appreciated - perhaps there is a more understandable guide somewhere?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Simon

You need to load Minimwatch on our pc and use this to setup minimwatch

The Synology server transcodes fine now.

Minim also works but is a bit tricky to setup. Install Java, Install Minimserver, install Minimwatch, open Minimwatch, goto Packages, install Minimstreamer, add transcoding flac:wav24. Then find that there is no difference in sound quality anyway.

Or maybe there is but it's so slight you don't hear it.  Naim said in one of their white papers that transcoding before it reaches the streamer reduces the load on the CPU and means a lower noise floor which may result in better audio performance.  So maybe it does maybe it doesn't, as long as you like the sound coming out of it, it's all good!

Not what I said - see the first sentence.

Both the Synology Server and MinimStreamer are transcoding so the NDX only gets transcoded input.

My point was that I don't hear any difference between the two NAS based servers.

Thanks for your help everyone, will press on and look at Minim as you suggest setting up the Watch and Streamer on my iMac, shame Synology seem to have changed their purpose with transcoding seeing it more as way of increasing compatibility than allowing flexible audio options. Its a much simpler interface!
