Netgear GS105 and Airport Extreme

Posted by: Camlan on 14 May 2014

Has anyone any experience in setting up a GS 105 to work with Airport Extreme. I have Ethernet connected GS 105 to Extreme and Unitiserve and NDX to GS105 but quite simply it doesn't work - I am getting a server not recognised message.

I think it has something to do with IP addresses because my iMac won't work either when connected to the GS 105. I get a message 'Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet'.

Anybody any ideas?

Maybe plug all three into AirportExtreme.  Maybe GS105 is not set to DHCp.

I strongly suspect that DHCP is running on both devices, which is a no-no.  You need to use only one as a router.  Decide which one, and turn off DHCP in the other.

Netgear GS105 is a simple unmanaged switch.

Try a reboot - switch off & on

As said above DHCP is meaningless to a GS105. If you can plug the devices directly into the AirPort Extreme and they get an IP address, but not when you connect the GS105, I can only assume you are plugging the GS105 either into a wrong or faulty   port on the Extreme (ie not a working switch port), the cable is faulty or the GS105 switch is faulty.

That worked. Thanks Mike. You ought to set up a consultancy on this although I don't know why I didn't think of it, it's usually my default solution next to hitting with a hammer!

Glad you got it sorted. I would be concerned if the switch locked up and required a power cycle, that doesn't sound right, I would keep an eye on that just to see if that was a rogue one off or something is starting to fail in the switch / switch PSU.

Thanks Simon, I think that on reflection it was my fault. Instructions say to connect and then power up, I think I did it the other way round.
