Asset QNAP problem

Posted by: Dungassin on 14 May 2014

A little question for anyone out there who owns the version of Asset upnp for QNAP.  Today I paid for and downloaded the x19 version for my QNAP P219II,  First I did the firmware upgrade from QNAP which was suggested when I logged in to my NAS, and then installed Asset onto the QNAP as per the instructions.

I went into the configuration and as the suggested music source appeared correct (\Share\Multimedia), made one change which was to set FLAC to be transcoded to WAV.  Clicked on APPLY, and was presented with a page saying Asset was restarting.  After 30 minutes this was sill there.  So I went back to the main page and clicked Rescan.   The window just showed 'rescanning', but no progress report as I am used to seeing with Asset for Windows (running on my laptop), and on checking my NAS, none of the little flickering lights usually present when rescanning etc were flickering).

Hmmm.  Uninstalled and reinstalled Asset QNAP.  Tried again, same result.  Had a bit of lateral thinking and changed the music source to just \Multimedia.  Set it off again.  This time, lots of flickering lights, but still no progress report (counting tracks, etc etc) on screen).  After 2 hours lights still flickering.  Looked at Asset QNAP via nStream - no music files seen (i.e. empty), checked with Twonky and Asset Windows - all my music appears to be present.

Normally, on the rare occasions when I have forced a complete rescan, it takes about 30-40 minutes. Is it just taking a long time as this is a new version of Asset? (I have 66903 tracks and nearly 5000 albums according to Asset Windows, totalling nearly 3TB).  Is it normal for this Asset QNAP version not to show any progress information?

I will be trying to sort this out via the Asset Forum, as soon as I can persuade them to let me log-on (even been through the reset password for Asset Forum with no joy so far), but this will have to wait until tomorrow, as my patience this evening is now exhausted.  However, I assume that if there is a problem it is probably something to do with where I am telling it to look for my music.

Mr Spoon on the Asset forum did say how to find out the exact path on the QNAP, but I'm afraid I didn't really understand what he said (probably me being a bit thick).  So if anyone can tell me how to find out the path to my Multimedia directory, I would be grateful.

Got the name of the NAS slightly wrong.  It should be 219PII.

Just now managed to log-in to Asset Forums, but will not post my query there until tomorrow.  Going to leave everything and see if the NAS drive lights are still flickering tomorrow morning (It has 2 x 4TB Hitachi drives in it)

Well, no replies.  But I can now access my music on Asset QNAP following a helpful reply from Mr Spoon.  However, the NAS drive lights are still flickering continuously.  Perhaps I'll have to disable the automatic rescan which is now set at 60 minutes.

music folder path is /share/Multimedia

Hi Dungassin.

I have been working through the beta versions and upgraded to the full release when it came out.

There was a change in the last beta versions in the scanning process, which Spoon told me made it more crash proof.  Anyway the net effect is that it now scans very sloooooowly (on my ancient TS109II it takes 30-40 minutes to scan 7000 tracks whereas the first betas did the job in 5 minutes).

May be related to your issue, or not, but thought you would appreciate some moral support !

Hi Dangassin, I hope that your problem has been resolved. I find that most of my streaming problems sort themselves out after a few switching on and offs - it seems to be a black art to me! Not much use to you, sorry. The main reason for my message is to thank you for pointing me in the direction of Asset for QNAP. I have been looking for a way to transfer from FLAC to WAV but without any success - until I saw this post and installed it.

Anyway, I hope that your system is working properly now..

Thanks again,

Matthew

Thanks for your replies.  As I said, I now have Asset QNAP up and running.  The NAS lights stopped flickering after 24 hours.  i.e. appears slower to scan the NAS, and also seems slower to respond to nstream from my iPad3 than when using Asset (Windows version) on my i7 2.7GHz (? units) Windows 8.1 laptop.  Still, at least I no longer have to have my laptop running when listening to my NDS!

Well, back to re-learning the ins and outs of Sibelius (notation software, not Jean!), and Photoscore Ultimate.

I have just installed Asset on QNAP. I had a few problems but these were all solved by making sure that all other servers on the QNAP nas we're turned off. Hope this may be of help to other users.
