New TV

Posted by: JamieWednesday on 18 May 2014

Hello all. I want a new TV but am very out of touch with all this.

Our 'main' TV us still an analogue 30" Toshiba from turn of the century. Great picture and great sound and somehow much more 'depth' to the image than many flat screens since. However, times have changed and clearly flat screens are superior these days and I can see signs of the picture deteriorating now. We have a budget Samsung 30" on the wall in 2nd room from a few years back which is OK but I want better.

It will be fed by a Sky Box and a new Blu-ray player (which I will also need).

Want about 40-42".

Clearly decent IQ is a defo but how does sound hold out on these things? Will I need some kind of additional (two/three way) speakers or sound bar? (Don't want or need surround/rear sound). Also want it internet connected/wifi.

Want to stay within three figures total budget for TV (and speakers if needed + Blu-Ray player and new stand)

Can anyone give me some suggestions for TV please? I'll go and try out first in John Lewis but would like a starting point.

Thanks

this looks like a great bargain to me.  I have read no reports on these new Panasonics but have two from about 5 years ago that have been great TV's so far.  The 50 inch is an even better bargain and i am very tempted!

We have a 42" Panasonic led and the picture is lovely. The sound, on the other hand, is totally useless, like a £5 radio, so you'll need a soundbar for definite.

Depending on your room size & wishing to use Blu-Rays, are you sure 40-42" will be big enough. If you can accommodate one, i'd go for a 50" at least esp when watching films in their native aspect ratio.

Always get bigger than you think you need!  Once you get over the initial 'wow, that's big' reaction you'll appreciate movies etc much more.

42" Panasonic Plasma from a few years ago. Fantastic blacks, colours and contrast. Great motion tracking and sound.

Where we have out TV the limit to size is it's width a 1M wide is about the limit. That is so that we can still get out through the french windows to the garden. This means a screen size up to 42 or so, we have a 6 years 37" Sharp ATM which is a fine TV but is starting to ghost on blacks, so we are looking to replace it soon, so keeping an eye on this thread.

Panasonic 42 GT60 plasma bought last year as a replacement for a broken (accidentally ) 42 G20. As Graeme mentioned it has a fabulous picture and great with motion handling making it great for sports etc . I had a good look at the LED's but ultimately they don't come close to plasma , especially with blacks and motion. When OLED becomes cheaper and more widespread it may be a different matter.

Just measured it - 995 mm wide.

Thanks Pete that would fit.

I'll make a decision when I can chat with my TV man.

My dad has just ordered the 50 inch panny I mentioned about. He had a 100 pound voucher so it has cost 450 pounds for a 50 inch tv.  There is no stock at present so he has to wait 3 weeks. I don't think Panasonic make plasma anymore, certainly not on 50 inch screens so technology wise that is not an option. I viewed this tv at 42 inch in sainsburys and it looked very good. I thought the plastic surround and stand looked a bit cheap though.

I have the Panasonic GT60 plasma, they're still available if you look around, but motion panning is not their forte.  You get a kind of juddering effect.  But everything else is just stunning, the black depths have to be seen to be believed.

Maybe its your tv or set up? Motion is great on mine.

Nah, check out the GT60 owners thread on AVForums.  Loads have an issue with it.  Not on 60hz content but 50hz is pretty bad.  You have to switch on 'Intelligent Frame Creation' to smooth the judders and it kind of defeats the idea of the Pro set up.  A professionally calibrated set will have that set to off.

I've turned mine on to Minimum, it has four settings, Min, Mid, Max and off.

It might be worth waiting until the World Cup has finished. Prices may be higher at the moment because of demand.

PS. I've always had Panasonic TV's and never had any issues with them.

Thanks folks, much studying. It's easier than I thought to compare pictures in shop (some are really bad!) but listening is near impossible. Clear I will need a sound bar tho'

Jamie

I'd recommend the Sony KLD 40W905A.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/...dl-40w905a_TV_review

The picture is superb and the sound isn't bad, I thought I'd need a sound bar but having used it for 5 months I'm quite happy with the sound.

It's main strength IMO is the picture quality of SD output, it's that good I cancelled the Virgin Media HD channels. Also, the TV came with a free Sony Blue Ray player, DVD playback is so good I sold the Blue Ray player, although I do have a very good DVD player.

The only complaint I have is the colour is too saturated on the vivid and the standard settings. I use the custom option with the colour level reduced slightly.

It's not a current model, I think it was replaced in April. You may not be able to get it at JL, but it is still available at other places and at a very good price.  Although JL may still have some stock, go in store and ask them to check.

I agree. Ive got the 55W905. Got it from JL with a free BR player. Picture is tremendous. Astonishing sometimes. Think it betters my last 2 plasmas ( Panny 42V10 and LG 50pk590). Now and then get a weird artifact on very fine patterns or checks. There is probably a setting among the many to sort this. Also poor if wide viewing angle required. Makes DVDs look really good indeed.Reasonably good sound ( for a flat screen tv) can be had by setting equaliser scale to slope left to right at about 30 degree angle + another setting I cant recall.

Stunning picture and consumes way less power than my old 50 LG. I mean way less. That bad boy used to heat up the room.
