FIFA World Cup 2014

Posted by: Chris Dolan on 18 May 2014

Atletico Madrid win La Liga and Arsenal sneak the FA Cup. Citeh's money taints the Premiership - sadly.

So who is going to win the FIFA World Cup (sponsored by McDonalds). Is Suarez is going be the top scorer - or would he fail to score with Jordan? Eddie that is

Well it's being held in Brazil - the smell up coffee and wake - imho - what do you guys think?

Nice summary - and a degree of seriousness that this thread lacked earlier.

May I apologise if some of my earlier posts on this thread have offended - I appreciate the concerns that have been expressed to me privately - thank you for letting me know.

So from now on let's enjoy the festival of sport - the quality of those participating and the diversity

Why dont we have reporters like her.....a lot better looking than Adrian(the gob) chiles.

Can we give a bit of credit to Gaby Logan. Smart, good at her job and gets the gig because of those things not her (good) looks. She has a nice self deprecating humour too.

My wife took a long look at Thierry Henry and said 'hmm, very cool, very French..and doesn't he know it!'. Nice one.

I like it Chris, the only difference is your Wlishere for my Henderson. But to be honest I think Wilshere should be given a go.

Oh, but Rooney should be in the centre behind Sturredge and Sterling on the right with Barkley on the left.

Goals are coming.

Heres a couple of stats about England's performance against Italy.

  • England recorded their highest-ever World Cup pass completion rate (91%) in the opening match v Italy (1966-2014).
  • Wayne Rooney created more chances than any other player in the England v Italy game (three, including one assist).

I still think Gerrard and Henderson sat too deep for consistent and fluid attacking play.

Anyway, looking forward to Spain v Chilie, two very good teams, perhaps some more surprises are on the table.

Probably because they don't trust the back four.

First half-hour of the Spain v Chile game and I think Chile look a very good side. High energy, confident in possession (even in their own box) and swift in attack.  Very well worked goal, too.  The scorer showed a lot of composure in the box to create the space for his decisive shot.

2-0 to Chile! Are Spain out? Casillas at fault again for a weak punch on the free kick.  If Spain are to turn this around we are going to see a terrific second half.

I love this Chile side - fast, accurate and utterly without fear. They are terrorising Spain. 2 up already, and if they can maintain this pace, one senses more to come.

Spain are just giving the ball away - fatal against a team like this.

Yep, tactically they have it spot on, hounding in packs with bags of energy, they are surely the hungriest team so far...and looks like a collective haircut pact to boot.

To be a Spanish supporter must be the most frustrating thing in the world at the moment.

Jason.

P.S. Yep Fabio, we expect no less from the Italians.

I was also impressed with the passion shown by the Chilean team, and their supporters, when singing their national anthem.  Who would not be touched by that?

Of all the teams at this World Cup, so far the Chilean players and supporters seem to want it more than anyone else. Maybe their time has come?

Chile do seem to play as a team - which helps

Looks like they are first going to have to fight it out with the Aussies to avoid the wooden spoon. Given the Aussies' effort against the Dutch earlier today, my money would be on the Aussies to finish third.

Del Bosque should be jailed for his team selections.  Cassillas and that dopey looking striker were rotten choices.

The Real keeper has sat on the bench all year and the striker plays for Athletico, a team that plays entirely on the counter attack.  Problem is, Spain's midfield are from teams that play pressing possession football so the midfield and striker are on different wavelengths.

The body language of Spain from the off has looked strange.  Like they lacked heart and I'd put that down to the manager again.  I'm not sure they're fully behind him.

Magnificent performance by Chile, both the team and their wonderful supporters. Am tempted to go out and buy a replica Chile shirt!

I know, I want one too.

They are great, the best team in the tournament thus far. It's a long time since I've seen an entire team play with such pace, intelligence, commitment, passion, courage, intent and never say die spirit. Two great goals as well.

The match between Chile and Holland is gonna be TASTY for sure.

I think your on to something there Jota, they do seem a little subdued. The attacking play was the usual tip tap, but lacked any real bite, Pedro came across as a bit of a donkey, and Casilles's cock ups in the first game seems to have ruffled the defences feathers.

Chillie were maniacal in their pursuit of a win, good on em. Now looking forward to see the game with the Netherlands.

Does anyone remember that sound track I mentioned in a previous post????? I just hope it wasn't Fat a Boy Slim
