Uniti Serve Ripping Problems

Posted by: Chris Bell on 23 May 2014

My Uniti Serve used to work very well.  Ripped CDs and got all of the meta-data right.  Now it rarely gets the album art and album names come in wrong or unknown.  Fixing in n-serve only works 30% of the time.

Firmware was updated a few months ago to the latest spec.

Check the setting for the database it's using for the cd info lookup.  Something may have gone amiss there.

Let me add to my frustration that nServe will not let me rename Artists.

Where (what app) do I find the cd database?

You are probably doing it wrong. Add the artist to the list and then choose from the new list. Deleting nServe and reinstalling sometimes works wonders.

Just ripped a Amad Jamal CD and the UnitiServe incorrectly labeled it Colin Forbes Blood Storm.

I know it's a setting in the DTC for Windows.  I can't seem to find it in n-Serve for OS X but I'll keep looking.

According to the nServe app, it is using "cddb" to look up data.  Can't find how to change?

It sounds like the UnitiServe is offline and is looking up albums in its internal database. Does ripping take a long time ?

Posted on: 23 May 2014 by Chris Bell

I don't think it's offline... I can do a google search in nStream.

Very new releases sometimes go wrong, as the metadata doesn't yet seem to be available on line. My Serve (it may be different in the uk) looks at the AMG (All Media Group) database and gets it right 99% of the time. I think Jan-Erik is right - for some reason the Serve is not searching on the internet. Try powering down the serve (making sure you wait for the logo to stop flashing before you turn it off and on again) and it should reconnect. Have you downloaded the Naim Set IP tool - if not, do that, as it will make everything more solid.

The setup can be a bit of a pain, but once it's right, it just works.

How do I change the database? I want it to use AMG but currently it is using CDDB which may be the problem.

Chris, do the things I suggested above.

I have rebooted the UnitiServe, twice.  No change.  I have the mac version of the IP tool.  Can't find where to change the database?

I think you might need to do that on the Naim Desktop Client.

Look on the bright side- at least it's ripping the music properly!

I dont think the database can be changed.  On mine, it first searches on AMG and then on FreeDB. I remember Doug saying when I spoke with him on his visit here that Naim had paid licence fees to both for these searches.

Hungryhalibut,  what exactly does the Set IP tool does?  I bought my US used and didnt know about the Tool.  I just upgraded the US to the latest firmware and then downloaded the DTC.  I set a fixed IP address for the US via my router settings.  Was there some thing else that should have been done?  I just downloaded the Set IP tool from the Naim website but I can't open the file (NaimIPTool.msi file).

Chris, go into the DTC, go into tools, status and messages, system status. Eight lines down you'll see 'Internet accessible', which should say 'true'. If not, there's the problem. I cannot see anywhere to change the database, I think AMG is the default first choice, but it won't work if you are offline. Sorry I can't answer the question.

The set IP tool enables you to fix the IP, subnet mask, DNS server and default gateway. You've assigned an IP address, but not set it, which is what the setIP tool does. when I did it, the file opened fine, so you may need to try again.

Checked my setting, Internet accessible: True  The UnitiServe is connected to the internet.

In the Mac nServe app, the database is set to CDDB, but there is no way to change it.

I suggest you drop Phil Harris at Naim an email, and he'll be able to sort you out. He can dial in to your computer and check exactly what's happening. Good luck!

The only CD DB reference in nServe/DTC is under System Functions where CD DB seems to be the local database of ripped CDs.

I experienced a couple of instances where a CD showed up on the ripping monitor as unknown even though they are well known albums.  I cancelled the rip and tried the next day and this time the correct title and artist showed up.

Hungryhalibut, thanks.  Got the tool to work and have set it up.

Great, well done. It's worth the faffing to ensure everything is nice and solid.
