High speed bikers on Isle of Man TT course

This is hairy stuff. Starts off slow then gets quicker, much quicker...sound full up best.
I bought a Blu Ray called Closer to the Edge, a documentary on the Isle of Man TT race and in particular, one rider, Guy Martin. Some incredible footage, parts of it in 3D, and Guy Martin is some guy. Have to laugh and admire at his single mindedness.

If you think that's hairy you should have seen it before that part of the circuit was made one way, the rest of the lap is two way when roads are open ,they are normal roads when not used for racing.
So far this week there have been several reports of people going the the wrong way now that is hairy.

Have visited the island so many times i have lost count. Always used to stay at the Beach Hotel in Ramsey,a true 5 star dump but a good laugh. Do have a look for me if its still there pls.
My old boss from many years ago used to race over in the island.
I good place to watch racing from is called....Stella Maris. You come out of parliament Sq in Ramsey go along May Hill and before you get to Ramsey hairpin on your left is a house in a slightly elevated position with great views. The owners used to let people view from their front lawn if you made a donation of a few quid to the RNLI. Worth checking out if it still happens.
The other place if you can get seats is at the Creg n Bar Hotel on their balcony.
Please do enjoy your stay and post again to let us know how you got on.

Guy was called Phil Read. I worked for him about 35 years ago. He won about 7 TTs if memory serves me. Very good racer, but not so good at running a business.
It was thru him that in the past i`ve met people like Mick Grant,Dave Potter(nice guy) and Barry Sheene. My own favorites from years gone by were Ron Haslam and the American little Steve Baker(all 5ft of him).
One thing i will never forget about the Island was on one trip over on the ferry we landed at Douglas and drove along the front,i was with 2 friends and decided to stop at this large cafe for breakfast. It was 4 AM in the morning, but the place was packed. 4 in the morning..unreal.

Mista h the bike
I remember him he was good,I was once stood on a low pub wall at the entrance to parliament square as Phil Read approached something fell off the bike and bounced along the road past me it looked like an engine bolt,it was no surprise when his retirement was announced later the same lap.
I think that was in a comeback race at the same time as Mike Hailwood made his comeback.

Not a great biker fan, but I do remember Mike Hailwood (at IOM) riding a Honda 500c.c. four cylinder. The engine was so powerful the frame used to twist.
A late friend of mine used to race in the veterans race on a bike named Argon. Sadly he was killed on the Island by a tractor/trailer shortly after he retired there.
Hello Johnhgy
Are you still over on the island ? Sadly another death yesterday, from what i can make out from snippets of news is that 2 riders touched bikes somewhere on the Mountain section !!
Is the other rider OK ?
Mista H
I am sorry I have not heard any news of the other rider but I can tell you that Gary Johnson who won on a Triumph and crashed in his next race is due out of hospital today he suffered a broken collar bone.
If I hear anything I will let you know.
There's a highlights programme on ITV4 every evening of the TT at about 9pm. Followed tonight (5th) by the film "Closer To The Edge" as mentioned above. Worth catching if you've not seen it before. Pity about Johnson but great to see a Triumph win. Also good to see Dunlop's win on the BMW, their first victory in over 75 years. Makes a change from the usual Japanese domination.
If all he got was a broken collarbone he is a very lucky boy.

I have not been able find out about the other rider, the Motorcycle News article said Karl Harris clipped another rider it didn’t say if they both came off, I Hope not.
If you wish to find out about other injured riders this site has news "http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/conditions-of-injured-tt-competitors-1-6648064"
Hello Johnhgy
When you get back home and back to normal life again IF you get time it would be great if you could write a review of you time at the TT.
How you travelled/route where you stayed & watched the racing from. What pubs/restaurants you visited. + anything else of interest.
Its been a few years now since i last went to the island, but i must get a few of the lads together in the future and go back.
Hope you can give us all a rundown.

Must say mention of Isle of Man TT always conjures up images of Mike Hailwood and Joey Dunlop, particularly Joey who came from the same part of the world as me and was/ remains a legend back home.
The deaths at Northwest 200 and the TT are terrible however, I do hope that the PC brigade leave them well alone and accept, like the riders do, there are risks to carry alongside the thrills.
