Macintosh: UnitiQute and EyeConnect

Posted by: Martin S on 17 February 2011

Dear Community,
the question was raised before, but I'm still looking for a solution.

When the iTunes folder resides on an external drive, EyeConnect (latest release) is not able to see the folder.
Using an iTunes folder on the internal drive works very well.

Any solution for this problem?

I would like to stick with EyeConnect; I'm not interested replacing it with another piece of software.

Thanks for any help,
Martin

You may want to examine the possibility of creating a symbolic link (symlink) from the iTunes Music folder on your internal drive, to the iTunes Music folder on the external volume.

A basic tutorial on the manner for accomplishing this can be found on the MacWorld site:

See if this works–I don't use iTunes off-drive, as, unfortunately, this is a known limitation of iTunes storage which is just not worth (to me) working around. Your mileage may vary.

Odd - my Imac has Itunes on an external ITB WD firewire drive and works perfectly with Eyeconnect - (well as perfectly as Eyeconnect ever works)

Make sure that itunes has the correct path to the folder -

Itunes can be very fussy but I've never had a problem with using an external drive for storage.

Have you added the external drive/folder to the EyeConnect content list? By default during the install it only picks up your itunes folder. To add an external drive you need to open EyeConnect, Stop the server by hitting the Stop icon and then use the + icon at the base of the content list to add your external drive folder, then simply restart the service. You then select the music source you want to play from on the Qute menu.

Not 100% sure of your set up or how you have managed your iTunes Library but your "iTunes Library" files should be kept on your computer the actual files (MP3, AAc etc) can be found in your "iTunes Media" folder either on your computer (default setting) or on an external hard drive (with iTunes open choose the iTunes tab, preferences - then advanced tab and there is a dialogue box to change the iTunes Media location at the top).

As I have been led to believe if you move your "iTunes Library" file from your computer it won't work.

There are tutorials on the iLounge website explaining this and other things if that's of help too.

As long as iTunes knows where the music files are stored it really doesn't care where you put them.

Tog

When you say "music files" do you mean the whole iTunes folder (containing - ITunes media, iPod games, Album Artwork, iTunes Library file etc) or the "iTunes Media" folder located within the iTunes folder.

Just thought of something I use regularly to swap between or create different iTunes Libraries which might work for your problem. I don't have the time this weekend to try out different things brought up on the forum but this may work for you.

Hold down the "alt" key while opening iTunes and you should get a dialogue box with "Choose iTunes Library". You get the choice to create a new library entirely or choose between libraries. If your library is located on your external hard drive you could locate it this way and link it up. Not sure if this will work but worth a try.

Itunes media file location in preferences
/volumes/zeppo/itunes/itunes Music
  - where zeppo is the name of the firewire drive

Cheers Tog - more food for thought.

Tog,

The iTunes Media folder (file) is where files ( your music files - MP3, aac etc) are stored but the iTunes Library file is what iTunes uses to catalogue and play the files in the iTunes Media folder.

If I find the appropriate link which describes how iTunes is set up can I post it on this forum - not sure where I stand with the forum rules on that one.

Found the links at last. These should hopefully be useful to a lot of iTunes users out there.

http://www.ilounge.com/index.p...utorials   -   tutorial archive.

http://www.ilounge.com/index.p...7/

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/  - look under the iTunes Library and Back-up tab.

As I said on my previous post not sure where I stand posting these but they are useful for both Mac and PC users.

Similar Situation. I have my iTunes Library (so the Library itself and also the Music) on an external drive.

Making a simple Alias (a lot of people call also  alias a "Symbolic Link" in Mac OS X but this is technically wrong) on my internal drive did not work. But creating a symbolic link (a real one, not an alias) did solve the problem.

So imagine your iTunes Library resides on an external drive named myExternalDrive and your

iTunes Library is located in the folder called myiTunesLibraryFolder.

1) Stop Eyeconnect (via System Preferences)

2) Go to your Music folder located on your internal drive (~/Music) and rename the existing

iTunes folder to let's say iTunes.local

3) Open the Terminal Application (found under Application/Utilities)

4) now we create the symbolic link via ln -s. In our Case it will be:

4.1) First fo to your Music folder: cd ~/Music

4.2) Now create the link: ln -s /Volumes/myExternalDrive/myiTunesLibraryFolder iTunes

Remark: If you use names wit space e.g my drive then you need to specify the path

    to your drive in ' ' e.g. '/Volumes/myExternalDrive/myiTunesLibraryFolder'

5) Restart Eyeconnect

This worked in my case
