M2Tech Evo with Paul Hynes SR3-9V Power Supply
Posted by: Hot Rats on 22 February 2011
My Paul Hynes SR3-9V power supply arrived today. First impressions of the supply are very favourable. Bass is more tuneful and imaging is better defined (The rest of my system is NDAC/XPS, NAC52/Supercap/NAP250, Naim SBLs)
The Paul Hynes supply offers a worthwhile upgrade over the lithium battery supply!

Hmm interesting, I have a recent purchase of NDAC and currently getting fab results with an iMac and BNC M2Tech hiface. Was wondering if the hassle of the extra box would be worth it with the Evo. Did you ever compare Hot Rats?
Always wanting to push things I did try the iMac on a Naim Power lead and it makes a big difference as does an MK wall socket for the Mac! Would be interesting to know how much better the Evo.

I started off with the M2Tech Hiface before upgrading to the Evo. The difference is certainly worth the additional outlay. You really should try to compare the Hiface against the Evo and decide for yourself. If you upgrade to an Evo I would strongly advise that you do not use a cheap power supply. I bought a cheap supply for £9 to use when the Evo was in 'background music' mode. It saved me having to constantly recharge the lithium battery but the impact on the sound quality was very significant. All the benefits of the Evo were largely lost. You would be better off with the lithium battery (Supplied as an extra by Purite Audio in the UK) or going straight for a dedicated mains supply. Paul Hynes builds power supplies in the remote Scottish isles and Teddy Pardo have recently entered the frame with their TeddyEvo supply. I haven't heard the Teddy Pardo supply but I am more than happy with Paul Hynes' supply.
I believe that this digital setup betters my CDS2/XPS. That's not to say that my CD player is deficient. It's a very fine player and I can live happily with both CD and computer based digital sources. The only problem with my system is that I have a PC running Windows 7 as the host computer. You are much more fortunate to have a Mac. I really hate the Windows operating system but I just can't run to the cost of a Mac at present.
In the meantime, try to compare the Evo with the Hiface. Another very worthwhile upgrade is to add an external power supply to the nDAC, although this is a more costly option.

Cheers, I'll get the DAC run in and then see if they'll lend me one to try! This is in my 2nd system where I sit working with background music and periods of blasting it! I was not really sure how to approach streaming and ripping and so had a play with a sonos which I still have, fab interface but I came to realise I have the easiest and most flexible control if I connect the computers to a DAC. I really don't regret it. already the NDAC/hiface is better than cd5x and only one week into burn in. In fact so much better than spotify on sonos it has made me think this is really the way to go in that system.

I'm sure that Keith Cooper at Purite Audio will be able to sort something out for you Fozz but if that is not possible you're welcome to drive down to me and have a listen. Our systems are similar although you are running your SBLs active wheras I have only a single NAP250
UPDATE: I had a communication from Keith Cooper this morning and mentioned to him that you might be interested in trying the Evo. He is happy to sort that for you. Suggest you contact Keith on 0208 815 5878

Thanks Hot Rats, continue to be impressed with the DAC as it gets better every day. Just been fiddling with the dressing of the hiline on it with big improvement. It had been touching the floor, what a sin!
The DAC is working with Nait2 and Kans and is a brilliant match. I had briefly tried it in the main rig with active SBLs and am trying to forget that as it was superb in the bass and I probably want two. Not going to happen! All the best, Fozz

Hi again Hot Rats, just to say I have now got the Evo coming on demonstration so will report back soon. The Haynes supply is the SR3 not SR1 as I cannot find it listed?

Hi, Hot Rat. Do you say Evo sounds better with Paul Hynes than with lithium batteries?
