Uniti USB Input

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect an external hard drive into the Uniti's USB input? I have tried but the drive isn't recognised. Is it it a matter of reformatting the drive?

If this helps I have connected a Western Digital 320 Gb drive to the USB port. No problem, it worked at the first try and has continued to work without problems

I think it must be a USB powered 5200rpm drive.  I dont think the big boys will work.

It does have to be a self powered drive as the uniti doesn't provide enough power for a portable HDD (depending on the manufacturer). Also, the drive has to formatted to FAT16 or FAT32. I can connect my portable 320gb drive by using a USB "Y" cable. The two connectors at one end plug into the HDD and a USB port on my laptop, which provides the extra power required. It's either that, or buy a mains powered HDD.

This is from the troubleshooting guide....

8.1       A USB Storage device is not recognized

•  The  storage  device  (especially  USB  hard  discs  without  separate  power  supplies)
draws more electrical current from the USB interface than is permitted by the USB
standard.  Only  use  USB  storage  devices  that  conform  to  the  USB  standard  or  use
storage devices with their own power supply
.

•  The storage device is not formatted with an appropriate file system. The NaimUniti
accepts storage devices with FAT16 or FAT32 file systems. For large music archives,
we recommend to use a NAS device with a UPnP server.

I might know why? Do you have your original USB Hdd cable? Because I have a pocket external HDD that comes with a twin lead USB cable - the one lead is for the PC to power it, and the other is for an independent power supply.
