m2Tech DAC Young.
Posted by: DHT on 27 February 2011
I have been trying one of the new M2tech young dacs in my second system, at the moment I am using an EVO into my Audio Synthesid DAC, but the young is really good ,plugs straight into my Mac mini, I am very impressed with it, and one box neater too.

Almost matches the Mini - love to hear one up against the nDac - did I say that out loud - cripes I will have to leave town now. Italian so the first batch will have bits that drop off Alfa like...

Apparently the first batch had a problem in their firmware, sorted now, I am going to keep theYoung, when I get a chance I will compare it to the Weiss which is in the front room.

DHT.
That is going to be an interesting comparison. The M2Tech Young v2 has arrived in the UK as we write. I know that some good people will compare it to the Rega DAC and other DACs quite soon. I am also keen on hearing about extended hands-on experiences with the NDX.
Best wishes,
Peter

I got my v2 Young yesterday. All the problems encountered with the first batch seem to be sorted. It's a great DAC and well worth an audition if using a computer as a source.
I've also tried the Young with a friends Micromega transport and it also sounded great. A great value DAC and future ready.....

I have had a quick listen to both dacs with my ATC's and maybe the Weiss has a tiny bit better separation perhaps you hear a bit more low level stuff but there isn't a huge difference.
The Weiss is more convenient with the remote though, the Young is a superb little thing, I read that someone is making a power supply for it, if it's not too expensive I might give that a whirl.

DHT, what Weiss you have?
Posted on: 27 February 2011 by DHT
202

So, 1500 $ M2tech young dac sounds very close in SQ to 6500 $ Weiss DAC202?
I guess the high class external PS will take it even closer...
I think grand companies like Weiss/Naim should take lessons from Italy how to design low cost and high performance dacs
DHT, did you have a chance to compare USB-stick->nDAC against PC-USB->young dac?

Ama Hi, I compared Naim versus Weiss dacII and preferred the Weiss, when the 202 was released I thought it sounded better than the dacII and the remote is useful.
The Little M2Tech is extremely good though, I will try a proper external power supply with it and I believe there is going to be a Lithium Ion option.

High quality DAC design does not necessarily rely on high cost implementations - it looks good too.

I agree it appears that dacs ( some anyway) are better and cheaper than ever, which has to be good.

Has anyone done a comparisons with the Benchmark DAC1?
Posted on: 12 March 2011 by Tog
Thses dacs are designed from a slightly different angle than the nDac but the sound quality only has to get very close to make the vfm irresistible.

I have a mini mac, a benchmark dac1, 52 and 2x135's on a fraim, all in a different room to the sonus faber electra amator II's. I have just moved the components to a different room and repositioned the speakers. I had to move the speakers around to find the right position and now they sound great BUT now the sound is much more 'digital'. I am convinced that this is because the components are completely isolated and I am hearing an improvement to the system which is highlighting some source inadequacies. So I was wondering if a nDac would solve the problem?

David,
I did comparisons with the BM DAC1. Is the nDAC better? Maybe, probably ...a bit.
Did I change? Yes, I wanted the digital hub aspect - multiple devices plugged through the one box.
BUT, I do use EAR amps, and I know that Naim amplification will vary what I heard.
When I initially auditioned the nDAC I took the BM with me. It was interesting listening to the BM in that context, and I could understand some of the negative comments I have read by other people.
Ultimately you'll need to have a listen in your system.

You'll need to try for yourself. I think this difference isn't subtle but there's so many variables with DIG that ymmv..

Thanks.
JS please could you elaborate on the difference that you would expect. Also I think I will need a TOSLINK splitter are these upto standard and which one would you recommend?. The reason is that that I use the mini mac for watching movies and use the optical out to a receiver for multi channel sound ( using the pre-out to the 52 for the left and right front speakers). Alternativelcould I use a record output form the 52 for the receiver?

More info/music, less analytical or cool with the Naims. JS please could you elaborate on the difference that you would expect. Considering your system and files, I would actually recommend the NDX if budget will allow. Removes what I think is a reasonably significant computer player and output part of the interface. You're seeing more of the members here moving to streaming or a purpose built dedicated local storage player all the time. I feel they're making good choices. YMMV

JS. Beyond my budget I am afraid.
So do I need a TOSLINK splitter? Or can I use the record output from the 52?

So has anyone compared the Young DAC v.2 with the nDAC then?

DAC Young vs Bryston BDA-1? I would love to hear from anybody who gets the chance to do this comparison.
