Remasters on blu ray audio disc

Hello all,

I've not posted for a while, as I lost my musical mojo a little bit last year.  I seem to be back with it this year so far, and have become interested in high resolution music in FLAC format.  There seems to be a lot of classical music out there in studio quality masters.  This does not seem to have been picked up so much in "popular" music as yet, but I think there are glimmers appearing.

After re-visiting old favourites while ripping my cd collection to a Synology NAS, I have discovered a few artists who are offering FLAC downloads.  Other artists seem to be toe dipping in this area.  For instance Tom Petty has recently released his Damn The Torpedoes! classic on blu-ray audio with a free FLAC download for those who purchase it.  Annoyingly, I only found this out after buying the cd remaster!

I've also just discovered this evening that Rush are to re-release there best selling album Moving Pictures on blu-ray audio in 96khz 24bit quality.  However, I have to ask what is the point?  I'm a big Rush fan, and would love more of their back catalogue available in a higher resolution, but why Blu Ray?  To me it seems like a total dead end.  I can't see any manufacturer investing in high end blu-ray audio players with the dawn of high quality digital streaming devices like the Linn Klimax DS.

I just wish artists/record labels would "get with the programme"!

Does this annoy anybody else?

Perhaps I'm missing something here but why would the blu-ray player need to be a high end audio player? ....doesn't a standard blu-ray player have the means to replay HD Audio? and given the success of blu-ray in the AV marketplace surely there is at least a relatively sizeable specialised market for blu-ray audio releases?

Hopefully though these high res discs will be much better marketed than DVD-A ever was!

Doesn't source first rule apply?

The source is the Blu ray, hence I'd rather have a blu ray music file on an average player than a mediocre CD on the best CD player

Wasn't Moving Pictures edited digitally in any case? So at best its 16bits 48 kHz resolution.

2 versions will be available, a CD/Blu-ray and a CD/DVD-A. Both extra discs offer the same soundtracks, a Hi Res 5.1 mix and a hi-res stereo.

I know which one I'll be buying, so at least I can stream it back through my Naim dac.

But something about ' Tom Sawyer ' in 5.1 has me interested.

Kev,

Completely agree. But am relieved it will be available on DVD-A.

Even better emulate Paul Mc. and make the album available as a 9624 download!

Great album, the first I chose to needle drop to 9624,
