iOS 4.3 iTunes Home Sharing

I regret Naim won't support AirPlay. That would be dream-combo: Mac Mini (library) + iPad 2 (management) + Naim Uniti/UnitiQute. Dream on...

Airplay statement due from us towards the end of this year.

Good news! Now I like Naim even more!

Hopefully that will include the HDX music being visable on itunes???

Does this automatically mean more supported platforms than iOS only? AFAIK airplay works at a higher abstraction layer then native OS and support for other platforms should be abstracted by its API?

Remember the renault advert? In the 80s, with the couple driving home. Husband says he is going alone in business. Says the car will have to go. Wife, in sultry sexy voice, says:"You sure you're not being a little.... hasty?"

A youtube search for "die you yuppie bastards die" (no, honestly...) will bring forth this magnificent oeuvre for your delectation and delight

That's a completely different technology (Digital Audio Access Protocol, or DAAP)–keep in mind that, using DAAP, you can stream to but cannot copy onto your iPod files from another Mac or PC iTunes Library from within the iTunes application–so I wouldn't expect that to be possible from the HDX, either.Posted on: 08 March 2011 by 2roomsor1

Your NAS is amazing then, every else reports that they get a library of un-named tunes.

I'd suggest that's more of an iTunes issue than our issue - iTunes is rather dumb when it comes to how it deals with being presented with a Naim Server folder structure in that it "sees" the entire structure as a single album and completely ignores the folder structure itself. I'll guess it probably doesn't import Kaliedescape movie folders either.
Of course iTunes - as with all Apple kit - works nicely if you use it exactly how daddy Steve tells you too and source its content either from CDs or from the iTunes store.
As has been mentioned on here before we are looking at implementing a parallel "MP3" rip to enable other systems to access your ripped music collections more easily and that's hoped to hit in SP3...
Cheers
Phil

How are microsoft in any way in the music game? I would bet FLAC is bigger than WMA files for instance.
Posted on: 12 March 2011 by realhifi
They are on millions and millions of PCs which support Flac whereas iTunes does not. If you look at the Apple bashing it usually centers around the lack of support for Flac and the need for conversion of Flac to whatever iTunes supports. Read between the lines when you read something from Dr Dre or Sony, whatever. I mean Sony is certainly in the game and their tight allegiance with Microsoft is pretty well known. Can you say Blue Ray? They are not Apple centric and you had better believe that they would like nothing more than a big slice of the business that Apple has now in the form of downloads. You think that Apple and Microsoft (yes, the one that rules PC software) are looking to bury the hatchet and start singing Kumbaya? Too much money at stake.
But hey, weird things have been the norm for the last few years so who knows? Maybe they will have a war in which one ups the ante on resolution downloads and the other tries to go higher? Stranger things have happened. Maybe we'll be buried in high resolution music in the future.

no need for Airplay. I have a half a dozen Android apps on my HTC and Galaxy Tab that work as remotes for streaming iTunes music from my Macs over home network to Uniti. Works like a charm.http://www.macstories.net/news...itunes-home-sharing/

I'm puzzled why folk can't get on with iTunes - it imports data from CDs, downloaded files (not just iTunes store) and you can share libraries either using DAAP or using NFS. You can add artwork manually or use one of several tools to automate this. The Sonus recognises the AIFF files including all the artwork using Samba file sharing. The rips are indistinguishable from those made with cdparanoia or XLD with a few exceptions of badly scratched discs. It also neatly files everything on music disk - artist, album, track. Where you've got two original albums on one CD, it is really easy to split them in to two albums and there are Doug's Applescripts that let you manipulate the Tags very easily. And I get downloads of Shirley Collins rarities from the Apple store.
And of course, if Paul's post implies that Naim are going to embrace Airplay then the future is very bright indeed. If the NDX could just pick up my iTunes created volume as easily as the Sonus can then ... I'm there.
As long as I can access everything through a standard Chrome browser and iPad then I'm sold.
All the best, Guy

If you look at the Apple bashing it usually centers around .
cider making, well it does in these parts? It is really easy to use XLD or Max to convert FLAC to AIFF or ALAC so a non-issue really. There are also plenty of players if you'd like to play FLAC directly. Does anybody buy PCs these days, this is the 21st century after all: this the age of the iPad and Android - the future's so bright I gotta where shades.
We definitely need Airplay on Naim kit - it is the natural replacement for UPnP which seems to be so problematic.
As for Sony they always back a loser - BetaMax, mini-Disc, SACD .... and are obsessed with DRM - shame really as they made great cassette decks

If naim start supporting AirPlay then they are going the downhill ways of B&W, next they'll start manufacturing stuff in China. Apple's ecosystem is locked in and it's not good. uPNP is free and it's a open industry standard that many many manufacturers use.
I dont want to be locked into Apple, and should Steve Jobs go, and if their company goes down hill (again) you're stuck with a proprietary system from yesteryear.
Please use OPEN standards NAIM! Forcing people to use Apple Lossless or ... yuk.... MP4 to just use AirPlay sucks big time!
Moderated Reply: Gary, I felt your post to be somewhat insensitive so I have moderated the language used in the second paragraph. I don't think this has impacted in any way on the point you have expressed here. Thanks, Richard

Gary I'm sure Steve Jobs' family would feel touched by your concern -
Surely speculating upon the illness and mortality of someone you have no regard for has little to do with Naim hifi and even less to do with intelligent discourse.
Shame on you

Does anyone buy pcs these days - yes! Here's a link to an excellent analysis by a self confessed "apple holic":
http://blogs.computerworld.com...how?source=rss_blogs
Around 20% share is not exactly dominance. I'd like a tablet as a remote control for my music and video systems but can't see any other use for it. To big to carry around routinely when I am out so not likely to replace a smart phone, and not as easy to use as a laptop for general computing at home. Why are all these people buying iPads (genuinely puzzled)?
I have to use iTunes for my iPod touch but don't like it as a whole - not least because flac is my choice of lossless format. Thank goodness for Foobar and upnp which work fine for me.
Although I have no love for Apple as a corporation I sincerely hope Mr Jobs makes a full recovery from his health problems.

Naim should definitely support Airplay as it would be great for Apple users like me, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't support other standards. Ideally, I'd like all my customers to just use Apple then I'd not have to concern about software for other systems, but as you say a large number still use alternatives and I wouldn't want to lose them as customers.
Could we all agree to use Chrome as a browser as that works well on lots of different systems.
All the best Guy.
It would be great if I could rip books to an iPad and get rid of my bookshelves. I try to avoid paper based copy when possible. I need the space for my vinyl record collection.

iPad's success cuts laptop sales
Neater, lighter easier to carry and maintain - they do have a really nice user interface too.
OK I could use a Linux based notepad, but I prefer the iPad and have noticed lots of other folk changing to them - we always get asked is there an iPad/iPhone app - we are getting requests to support Android too, which we are starting to do.Naim should definitely support Airplay as it would be great for Apple users like me, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't support other standards. I disagree completely - the B&W Zeppelin was one of the better sounding devices at the Bristol show and the Airplay support is welcome. The Apple systems I have used over the years have been excellent and since the arrival of OS X, the core software has improved drastically (though I miss HyperCard).
I fully accept that you do not wish to use Apple products, just as for my own reasons I do not want to use Microsoft products. So I would advocate that Naim support both - best of both worlds to quote the great Scott Walker.
So for me Naim should support all those formats its customers would like to use as long as it doesn't over-stretch its resources. I think they'll find Airplay easy to implement and remarkably stable. Next they might support AIFF as Amiga Interchange File Format is my favourite way to store my music - even if it is a pain to back-up lots of uncompressed files.
UPnP seems clumsy to me - I say that because I would have thought NFS would have been a better option. Though in an all Naim system that uses UPnP I heard excellent results.
