Digital system built around Superuniti

Posted by: Andy526 on 29 May 2014

Last time I bought new equipment was approx. 20 years ago………

Most (all?) of the current technology is new to me, so, I’m in a “start over” mode and intend go completely digital.

The system I’m heading towards is a balance of quality and ease/simplicity of use. ( I hope), as follows:

MacBook Pro with external Apple USB SuperDrive

XLD to rip in AIFF

iTunes for playlist management

Synology NAS probably DS214Play.

Back up Drive:  probably a simple 4T Seagate  w/ USB connector

SuperUniti

KEF R 300

Transparent cables

Pure Music on an iPad Air.

Ok, any thoughts, comments or suggestions ???????

And what have I missed?????

Very similar to how I started... although I had  for considerable time had the majority of my music in a digital format / listened via computer before getting my SU. So the digital aspect wasn't a leap for me at all.

That said, I find iTunes to be horrid. Fortunately, with the SU or any of the Naim's streaming products, iTunes is basically irrelevant as you will be using N-Stream and a Upnp server to feed your device music. With that one caveat in mind, it sounds like you are on the right track, and the items listed should give you everything needed.

Oh... and if you can swing a Powerline for the SU, it makes a tremendous difference. Although this can also be added later when funds permit.

Thanks,

What a "powerline"?

(sorry to be such a dolt - but in searching, a million items come up)

The powerline is a Naim Audio power cord. Search the forum here for information, you'll find a plethora of discussions. One of the most talked about items here .

I have a SU with Powerline its great and more than happy with the system

For your NAS maybe consider a QNAP as you can install Asset Upnp on it, so saves having to keep a PC running. I am just about to purchase one.

Enjoy

thx, my understanding is asset upnp is only for windows environment - anything comparable for mac's?

Andy - you've asked the same question in two places - can you ask the mods to close one, as it will save us effort in answering.

I suggest you get a UnitiServe. It's expensive but really excellent and you can rip without computers. Just add a Synology NAS for backup and you are set. It also sounds better than a NAS, and if you get stuck Naim can help you out. Then you won't need to worry about asset and all that stuff; it just works.

thx, on first point didn't know where to post. will investigate NAS backup for UnitiServe....

but..... I was informed by dealer that US can't be backed up!   Maybe not such good info.

I'll close this one and let the thread in the Streaming Audio room continue;
