Promoting a Share to Store

Posted by: Chris Bell on 03 June 2014

Upgrading to a new UnitiServe SSD.  Need to promote my share to a store, but when I start the process the Naim software warns:  ENSURE SHARE IS EMPTY BEFORE PROCEEDING.

The share is not empty, it has 2000+ CDs on it.  Can I proceed?

Thanks in advance.

you don't have a backup? :-)

Having said that, I've done that in the past and it worked fine for me.

Just to be sure, why not create a new share, make it into a store, then copy the old share into the new store? Or just ask Phil.

I would like to do the same... A store has been promoted as share after changing some connections on my switch and i would like to get back my store without loosing my music.

Is that risky to do it ?

thx

Just make another Store and copy music into it. Back in the day it was advised to keep Naim ripped music only in stores and not populate them with other stuff. I don't know if that's still enforced but I can't think why anyone would want to do it anyway.

Check with Phil, but I think that the answer is, "no."  I'm pretty sure about this.

The Store is for music ripped by the uServe, and only for that.  The Share is for music you've downloaded, ripped on a computer, etc etc.

Create a new Store for what you'll rip with the uServe, and keep your old Share as a Share.  In n-Stream, or n-Serve, when you browse "All Music," it will all show up in one place and you'll not know the difference.  All the music will be listed, no matter where it's located (ie, in the Store or in the Share).

Every external store starts out its life as a share, until it is elevated.  You should have no problems, if it was previously used as a store.

Chris, did the share start out as a store? Does it contain rips from an older UnitiServe? Or other music?

I just did it and it worked without loosing music. But my rips have been made by the same machine.

Thx for your answer

cheers

If the store was created by a previous machine, there's an ownership file at the root of the share that you can trash (simple text string), but, other than that, there should be no problems.

Chris, YES, as long as the data on the share was created by an HDX or a Unitiserve, you can go right ahead and promote it to a store. I've done it many times !

But of course, I wouldn't ignore the advice already given to backup (copy) this share somewhere else first - a man (or a woman) can never have too many backups

Check out Amazon Glacier. It's the cheapest way to back up files in the cloud.

Unfortunately, it's a web service. I'll write some software when I have time to pick up files from my local machine and save it in the cloud.

But Chris has over 2000 CDs,  that's not a cloud, it's a bloomin'  tornado !

Thanks for the replies.... successfully upgraded the share to a store.  The new UnitiServe SSD rips CDs in half the time compared to the first generation version unit I had.  And it no longer spits the CDs onto the floor. Progress.
