I like that band Os Mutantes

Sergio Mendes. He wrote many of classics but I like this one a lot. This tune epitomises that laid back easy going feeling of late afternoon sun. Sambadouro from the album Brasiliaro.

ok. Michael Franks isn't Brazilian but I used to love this tune 'Down in Brazil' from his Sleeping Gypsy album.  This was the last track of the Side B. A nice classy way to end an album I thought.

Eliane Elias' groovy intro tune 'An Up Down' from Three Americas.

Brazilian singer/pianist/composer Tania Maria's 'Come With Me'. Disco fave's of the 80s and sounds fab in vinyl.

Another Brazilian piano player Joan Donato.

I love Brazilian down tempo grooves.

The first Sergio Mendes trax will always be my favourite Brazillian song of all time.

The second because it reminds me of football and the way they play the glorious game.

The third because I have always loved this track from Flora Purim

Clube da Esquina is a marterpiece and a landmark in terms of breaking away with the values of  the new tropicalism movement and the decadence of bossa nova that seemed to dominate the  . The mixture of african beats  northeastern brazilian folklore music, lapidated arrangements and Milton's unique voice created a fantastic atmospheric album. You don't need to speak brazilian portuguese to enjoy this  album. You just feel it. It is astonishingly beautiful!

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2001

Guilherme Vergueiro/Carlos Dos Santos

Espiritu

Naim Label

Espiritu is majestic. Brazilian pianist Guilherme Vergueiro teams up with seven-string guitarist Carlos dos Santos for this timeless album. From the opening track, a 10-minute, glorious rendition of K-Ximbinho's "Ternura (Tenderness)," the union of piano and guitar is perfect in every way and the notes flow smoothly as if coming from a single celestial instrument. The music's ethereal feel is what every musician longs to accomplish when playing classic works by Pixinguinha, Ary Barroso, Lupiscinio Rodrigues and Nelson Cavaquinho. Sometimes Vergueiro and Santos are simple and pure in their renditions, as with Pixinguinha's "Ingenuo (Naive)." At other times, however, these two virtuosos astound your senses: Rodrigues' "Se Acaso Voce Chegasse (In Case You Came By)" quietly moves from its unison introduction to a whirlwind performance of guitar excellence.

The album showcases six original pieces by Vergueiro and one by Santos amidst the other classics. For the listener, however, there is absolutely no rough transition from track to track. As if by magic, all you experience is superb musicianship by two consummate artists whose sole intent seems to be to lift your spirits with their magnificent artistic gift.

Astonishingly beautiful and a masterpiece, indeed. And volume 2 is close behind.
