Issue with 'seeing' hi def FLAC file

Posted by: Poggy on 19 June 2014

I wonder if you clever people can help please.

I have a WD Mybook World with Twonky preinstalled.
I downloaded a 24bit 192khz FLAC file to test and placed in a named folder in the music folder of the server.
Now, the FLAC file won't display (and therefore obviously play) when using 'album/artist' view mode but it will when using 'folder' view mode.
I assume I'm doing something silly in saving the file but anyone have any ideas? Could it be because the version of Twonky I have doesn't fully support certain functions? I think it's v5.
Thanks

Sorry I waited for a clever person to answer and nobody did, so I have instead.

If you are running V5 Twonky then that is very old indeed and I have never used it.  I tried to make Twonky become the upnp server for me but it just isn't very good, I was using v6 and then v7.

Have you set the tags?  Does it in fact have album/artist data entered.  If you can see it in folder mode then Twonky has registered it.

My Advice is to:

a) Junk Twonky and download a copy of MinimServer.  This product is supported and the guy who wrote the software will help you if needed.  Alternatively I think a few people on this site will help too.  It is free but the author likes a donation and why not?

b) Download a copy of mp3tags.  Now before you say I am using FLAC you have to understand that the tagging in FLAC is the same a in mp3.  So this program works quite happily.  It is a bit quirky and will drive you mad but it gets the job done.  If you are an Apple user then you will have to use something else, I don't think it will work on Apple.  The Apple fanboys will correct me if I am wrong - boy will they ever.  They may be able to recommend something similar.

Bon Chance.

Thanks Big Bill
I saw that my Twonky was old but as far as I understand, it's fairly well integrated with my NAS and I'm not in a position yet to upgrade my NAS. Further, I'd thought about trying to upgrade Twonky but other than this is issue, it seems to work fine.

I had a feeling it might be a tagging issue so I'll take a look at that. I normally just rip to ALAC using iTunes, quite frankly because it's hassle free and my portable devices are all Apple, but it might be time to invest in dBPoweramp.

Cheers

Can't comment on iTunes ripping because I tried iTunes and thought it was awful so I uninstalled it.  I like to keep things simple and dbPowerAmp does that it's a great system.

With Minim you will need to install a Java Run-time on your NAS, so if you ain't that familiar with it then that might be a problem.  You won't need to re-rip though.

With minim you can dream up your own tags and its intelligent decision tree works a treat, perhaps think about it for the future.  If your DAC is Linux based then you will be able to run it, perhaps you should go onto the minim site and ask a question in the forum there.

If you have any more questions please ask.
