Nstream not connecting to Superuniti on wired network.
Posted by: Samradford on 20 June 2014
Is anyone else having problems with nstream over a wired connection?
Wireless connection is fine, but wired has suddenly stopped working with nstream.
all other network functions have been fine including iradio and upnp, just the connection between superuniti and nstream seems to have gone kaput in the last few days.
Happens to me all the time, wired or wireless. One day nstream can see my SU, the next day it can't. Drives me crazy. Sorry, that doesn't help you, but you're not alone.
ChrisSU it helps me a lot, and not at all. Thanks!
Try killing the app and restarting it. Failing that turn the SU off and on again and it will work. It happens to me once a month or so.

Do just as HH says. I get the same problem on a regular basis for reasons unknown. I don't bother killing the app, just switch the SU off and on once (or twice if necessary), leave it a few moments and normal service will be resumed with n-Stream.
I have a theory based on my experience the issue is to do with IP address leases and the DHCP interaction between Naim and some home routers (there can be many variables including timing variables) . As others have said - try powering the SU on and off .. you could try and set the IP address manually so it is not reliant on the DHCP server and its leases but you might need to do a little research to do that properly.

Restarting the SU isn't a satisfactory solution for me because a) it doesn't always solve the problem and b) I really don't think it should be necessary to faff around on your knees like that. My SU is by far the most expensive network enabled device I've ever used, and it's the only one that has connectivity problems on my network. Well actually, it's not - the other culprit is my Unitiserve, so if anyone tries to tell me it's a network issue, not a Naim one, I may just have a sense of humour failure!
Simon - thanks, I might try looking at setting the IP address manually to see if it helps, although I'm no expert in that area.

Mine has been less flaky since fixing the IP address, which I found really easy to do via the SU menu and the router. It's well worth doing.
Thanks guys.
Multiple on/off cycles in the app as well as the SU have not helped. I even tried reinstalling the app from the app store on both my iPhone and iPad - to no avail.
Switching off DHCP is easy and using a fixed IP address seems easy enough - not sure if there are any untold consequences though - happy to try and see. Any advice or essential tips welcome.
I have restarted my modem/router and my Synology NAS without any improvement in nstream's capacity to find the SU on a wired network. I too remain convinced that the problem lies somewhere between the SU and n-stream (i.e. totally in Naim's domain).
Thanks again for chiming in.
I have my SU and US plugged into a switch, which is then connected to the router. I have an Airport Express plugged into the switch as well, which forms its own wireless network for nStream and nServe, and also to send music wirelessly to a Roberts radio cum music player in the kitchen. It works really well, and for the cost of a AE, would be worth trying.
Thanks Hungry Halibut,
I have in the past used a separate gigabit switch to supply the SU and other networked enabled AV gear (Oppo, TV, AV receiver) as well as my tried and true 1st Gen apple Airport express that is still going strong 11 years on. This was certainly the most stable, but by no means bullet proof network setup my SU has been in.
Unfortunately we are renting for 2014 while our house gets gutted and renovated. This leaves me relying on the ever fickle power line adaptors for much of my wired network (especially the bit involving the SU). Unfortunately there was just no room for my floor standers in our little lounge room so I now have a vastly overpowered bedroom system. WiFi seems to work great except if I listen 24/192 files (which was kinda the point of buying the SU!).
Perhaps, for this year I will just leave power lines out of it, rely on wifi and play my 24/192 files direct from the Mac mini in my bedroom (via optical).
Mine's the opposite, after months of working perfectly on my superuniti, the wireless nstream app suddenly says 'cannot find server' Very frustrating, any suggestions?
Look at the fourth post, it's easy to resolve.
Not so easy in my particular circumstance unfortunately. Plenty of on/off attempts over several days involving the SU and every other network device and indeed iOS app. I wouldn't dare burden fellow forum participants with network issues before making a concerted effort to turn it all off and on again.
SU on wireless = nstream works fine
SU on wired (power line network) = nstream not able to find SU (with auto connect and DHCP on)
Finally - with DHCP and auto connect off plus at least three more switch off/on cycles I now have working nstream with wired network. Here's hoping it lasts.
To celebrate I am listening to Ella and Louis in 24/192 "Can't we just be friends?". Here's hoping nstream and I can stay on friendly terms (until the next glitch).
Thanks again to HH et al
Ok if all devices appear to have valid IP addresses but the apps still can't see each other then it is possible the multicast discovery is not being allowed to work by the home LAN network components being used. There was quite a talk a couple years ago about this on the forum.
The solution, if this is the problem, can often be as simple as using a switch from Netgear, Linksys etc and wiring connections between it and the devices, and not sending everything via the broadband router switchports. The other part of the solution is to plug a wifi access port that is designed with multicast in mind into the separate switch, such as Apple AirportExpress. Use this new SSID for your Nstream and wifi streaming if you cant do wired.
With this your Apple and Naim multicast discovery should work fine.. and devices with valid ip addresses should discover each other

That's exactly what I did, as advised by Simon last year when I bought my SU - he was a complete star in helping me to get it all going.
Staying on this theme - well sort of-I was naimless 3 months ago and now post B&O can hear true music?? - my synology 214 play works great via router to devolo's eom's to my nd5/ sn2 BUT only via iPAD which is usually missing (as my missus steals it) and NOT with the remote or iPhone anyone else got this issue & solved it??

Thank you all for prompt replies. App working again, it took two on offs, the first only partly restored the connection. Irritating if minor glitch.
