Hi,

I have tried 2 pairs of headphones in my Qute and both are very low in volume although in settings the volume is at full you really have to turn the volume up to get a decent level of sound, also I have added a Nap 100 and turned off the speakers on the Qute will I still be able to use headphones as the headphones were not mine I can not test this? the headphones were Bose and Beat solo hd any advice please

You can certainly use the headphone socket with the speakers set to off.  I did this when I used my Qute as a source into my main system.

I don't recall having any issues with the level of the headphones (into a cheap Sony pair) but I didn't use it this way very often.

Gavin thanks for your reply

could be the headphones I have tried are more for phone use? its just that I don't want to spend a decent amount of money and find the volume is not very high after all that's what you want when using headphones, well I do

The volume on mine is decently loud but not as loud as my Marantz CD player or old amp.

I've swithered over buying a headphone amp.  My headphones aren't that difficult to drive either so it's not that.

Do you plug a headphone amp in the headphone socket?

Normally, you drive a headphone amp from a line output that comes before the volume control.  There is no line out on the Unitiqute.  You could buy a headphone amp with a built-in DAC and use the digital output from the Unitiqute.

I don't think you would want to use the headphone output to drive a headphone amp.  First of all, it comes after the volume control and secondly, it's not designed for that.

Use a pair of RCA leads to connect the headphone amp to the preamp out connections located immediately beneath the digital output on the rear of the UQ.

This will allow the volume to be controlled by either the UQ or your headphone amp. I set the volume on the UQ to 60 and leave it there then use my HP amp as my master volume control. You may need a higher volume setting on your UQ if your headphones are not particularly easy to drive.

Good luck.

It seems a bit of overkill to add a headphone amp to a Qute.  Surely that cash would be better spent improving something else.

Such as a good pair of sensitive headphones. Grados?

I'm using a Lehmann Black Cube 'phone amp connected to my UQ which I moved to my second system when I bought my SN2. It does improve over the sound of the UQ's own headphone output but, as you suggest, adding a separate HP amp may not be the most cost effective solution for the original poster.

Thank you for all your replies

I can not use the pre out on the Qute as I use that to connect the Nap 100 as one member suggested, guess I will have to put up with the volume as it is on the Qute

again thank you all

I have used a few "normal" headphones with a gen1 Qute (including Bose Quiet Comfort 3 noise cancelling while riding my bike trainer) and had no issue with volume. Is there any chance you have not adjusted the default maximum headphone volume in settings to 100? Worth checking under the wrench icon via remote handset...

Couple of minutes ago, I have tried 2 headphones. My senn's I usually use and those I use with my iPhone just to speak by phone.

Both at a level of 35 have a decent volume. I would say, the same volume I hear from the V1-DAC at that level.

In the settings menu on the Qute, after the Speakers  entry there is an Headphones one. I modified the Max Volume from 100 down to 20. In that case I couldn't go beyond that level, but you see that on the screen.

Again thank you all for the replies and advice for which I'm really grateful, I'm going to buy some headphones with decent sensitivity and try all the things that you all have suggested
