NAS + external hard drive for Uniti.

Hi,

since I own a Uniti I tried to play music by simply connecting an external hard drive to it. But no matter what I did the result was always frustrating. After 30-60 min the music just stops playing and I receive an "Source Error" or simply and infinite "Please Wait" and i need to restart the Uniti.
Now I read that a NAS system is a far better and more reliable solution.
So I decided to purchase a Synology DS110j NAS.

My question is, can I just further use my hard drive (WD Elements) and connect it to the Synology via USB  or do I need the speed of eSATA and have to buy an internal hard drive? (oh and which wire do I need to connect the NAS to my Uniti?)

You need to the following:

0) I assume you already have a router installed
1) Connect Nas to Router (Cat5e wire)
2) Enable UPnP software on the Nas and set-up parameters for it
3) Copy music to Nas under the Music folder used by the UPnP software
4) Connect Uniti to Router (Cat5e wire)

If you need more detailed information, someone with knowledge of the Synology DS110j will have to step up.

I have a synology 211 which share more or less the same software. The station requires an internal harddisk to install it's software an. The upnp server points to a folder that is in the internal harddisk volume. Your USB drive can be used by the nas as a volume for file sharing or backup. If you are really savvy with Linux you can probably create a symbolic link to point to your USB disk or something but this I havent tried nor is it supported. So I guess if you go that nas route, perhaps you should use the external harddisk for something else as a harddisk is required anyways.

nas stands for Network Attached Storage.

It does not connect directly to your uniti.

You uniti is on your LAN, Local Area Network. You need to put the NAS also on the same network, bang some music on it and share it via UPNP

Its then available to the uniti.
