IPAD to Supernait
Posted by: Dimac on 08 March 2011
What is the best way to get IPAD downloads direct to my Supernait,
I have a Uniserve and a CD5XS feeding the supernait,
I have tried the IPOD connection into my Uniti and that does not take the IPAD.

Little tricky there. One of the best is still Wadia's iDock with their iPad adaptor. That will allow you to take the digital signal out of iPad and then S/PDIF into one of the Supernaits digital ins.
Conversely there may be an adaptor that would take digital out of iPad, possible new HDMI adaptor from Apple?

If SQ is not the greatest factor you could simply get a mini (earphone)-to-RCA cable. If SQ is of importance, maybe look for a different source, like the computer you sync your iPad to.

The arrival of AirPlay on Naim will eventually solve your problems - 2012?
In the meantime try a Zeppelin Air - magic

Cambridge makes a nice looking dock that fits the ipad and extracts the digital signal. Or, with the new airplay feature, I'm wondering if you can stream directly from an ipad to apple tv...I think you can but don't quote me on it. My wife is getting an ipad2 this weekend and I have an apple tv so I'll be sure to try that.

I am using airplay to stream dig out of my ipod touch to my ATV/SN, and it works great, and the sound is very good, and even more convenient I have heard of people extracting dig out of a ipad using a camera adapter.

Tog,
Are they going to retrofit Supernaits?

You dont need a camera adapter to connect the iPad to the Naim DAC, so I assume this would be the case with anything else with a USB port.

Nobody (except Naim) knows - given that B&W have chosen not to retrofit Zeppelins or provide an add on box - I fear that it will require a factory refit similar to the digital ipod changes to the original Uniti. Who knows - in the meantime you could always just attach a Mac or an ATV. I would guess that IOS4.3 will be the "tipping point" as iphone/ipad users get the opportunity to stream from and to their devices. Are they going to retrofit Supernaits?

Many have been doing that for over a year now. If you can stream over the network to your iPhone in your car (as with PlugPlayer), I will be amazed.Posted on: 09 March 2011 by Tog

Thanks guys, I will start looking at the different options
I am working with my local Naim dealer, they might have a solution
I need the Sound Quality and the simplicity of a straight plug in
I will keep you posted

The new Apple dock for the iPad 2 sports an optical out. Should pass the bits right out for processing to any optical capable DAC.

I did not know that. That is very interesting.

My wife got her iPad2 last night. It streams audio and video to the appleTV quite nicely, but the sound quality is a definitely a step down from my Cambridge as a transport.

I stopped by an Apple store last night to take a look at the new iPad. I didn't buy one but I did buy an Apple TV and have been using it today at Tune through Rega DAC into Supernait.
My findings:
Compared the airplay from my iPad through ATV vs Airport Express. It is not the newest AE with N, but the optical output through it did not sound nearly as good as through the ATV. Newest AE might be better?
Compared iPhone 4 vs iPad streaming the same iTunes WAV rips from each through the ATV and the music files coming from iPad (Gen one) sounded better than the iPhone4. Didn't expect that. No idea why that would be the case. Also streamed same copy of A Bug's Life from both devices and sound from iPad was again better. Picture on 19" samsung LCD seemed about the same but wasn't looking at that critically.
One point of interest was that iPad can only stream to one client at at time, much like UPnP. Streaming music from MacBook iTunes I can send the same stream to several clients at a time.
Haven't compared the CD5xs as transport compared to the iTunes rip via iPad/AppleTV but imagine CD5xs via Coax will be better. Will report when I try.

Just thought an update may help
With a great deal of help from Lintone Audio
They seem to have given me a good solution.
IPAD to Apple Computer, then copied into NAS drive (Buffalo).
Transmission over mains with three Dlan wireless units
Buffalo 2TB (On the middle floor,Close to the Internet router hard wired) Transmitted down to the Uniti serve on the ground floor
This is playing through the Supernait, in the Music room (Great sound) All the data is in the UnitiServe.
On the top floor we now have all the Uniti serve data available to the upgraded Uniti(Playing into Focal Electra Speakers).
I tried to back up the UnitiServe on to the Buffalo (however it was going to need 156hrs and it stopped sending after about 7hrs) I will try later.
The lintone Engineer (Michel), did a great job and even set up a new DVD player for me.
I viewed a Bruce Springsteen DVD on Blue Ray, with the sound through the supernait,
Fantastic.
Thanks for all the help
