Queues For iPad 2

Posted by: ianmacd on 14 March 2011

In two different parts of the world right now, two different sets of queues:

One part of the world with overnight queues waiting outside Apple Stores for something that isn't even needed.  Own up iPad owners, has your life been revolutionised?  What do you actually use the damn thing for that you couldn't do before with a slightly smaller screen?

The other part of the world, destroyed over the weekend, with overnight queues waiting outside food stores for food and water.  And a beached fishing fleet where their houses once were.

I admit I am guilty of generally being very materialistic in my life (no kids, lots of nice kit) but this iPad 2 worship thing is really sticking in my throat at the moment, particularly given the pointlessness of the product versus the helplessness of the Japanese right now.

Well, the Japanese have been firmly behind gadgetry..... My wife didn't have a smaller screen before I bought her the iPad last summer while she was off work sick for a few weeks. It was a godsend. She hates PCs, uses them every day, all day at work and can't bear to look at one at home. Why do people havexa problem with that? It's not as if they cost thousands, it it?

Well I already have an iPad Mk1 which I'm very happy with so I won't be in a hurry to join any queue for the Mk2 version but, ianmacd, what a po-faced OP! Has it crossed your mind that it is thanks to the Japanese' love of gadgets that we have been able to see such an astonishing amount of coverage of the terrifying events in Japan as the earthquake struck and the tsunami wreaked havoc? I believe the Japanese are a calm and resilient people and will get through this. They don't need your pity.

Not sure why we need to compare apple store queues to the tragedy unfolding in Japan.

I have 2 kids and lots of toys. To be honest, I think the iPad is the best toy I have ever bought. I cannot believe how useful it has been and how much I use it. Of all my toys it is my favourite, relegating the 500 series system firmly into second place, very seriously.

We now have a houseful of ipads, everyone here loves them.

Don't get the connection at all.
You might as well ask why anyone's posting on a forum when the tragedy in Japan is unfolding.
Or buying an amplifier, for that matter.
The iPad is a seriously impressive piece of technology. It has nothing to do with events happening elsewhere - if it did nothing new would ever get produced.

I won't be in a queue for an Ipad2 or xxxpadselectively that's for sure. As for taking stuff on holiday, a switched on mobile is all we take, holiday is the operative word here.
