Unitique iRadio problem
Posted by: my_naim on 15 March 2011
My laptop and my qute are connecting wireless to the same router but My laptop can play the 320kps music non-stop and my qute stops every 5 seconds. I have checked the buffer level and it drop to 0 and then recharge to about 70% before it starts to play again, can somebody help. Many thanks

Are they the same type of stream etc?
They is not the same eggs.
You also need to understand the issues of wireless interference, is the qute closer to something else than the laptop, which way is the aerial pointing etc?
Wireless is really not all it cracked up to be, can you run ethernet?

What 320kbps iradio channels have you found? Rebooting the Qute may help.

I had one in the shop having the same "problem" and it basically needed to be relocated closer or more in line of sight to the router and now it is perfect. Obviously the other answer is wiriing it. Linn radio has a few 320 kbps stations.Although not a perfect solution the ethernet over power is a solution that works in extreme cases that you simply can not wire. Can't say that I have listened close enough to form opinion on that though.

I have the same issues when playing the UQ iRadio! However, try using the UPnP source via Asset UPnP (they have an internet radio feature) and you should have no problems with higher kbps streams! I have listened to AVRO (Baroque Around The Clock) and it sounds just fine! Its a more circuitous route but it works!

I have bought a 20ft cat5 cable and plugged my qute to my router directly but the problem still can't be solved. I like to listen to the Linn Jazz channel which is 320kps, My router is Netgear 3500 and I have 30MB boardband service at home so speed should not be a problem. Pls help

my_naim: It has nothing to do with the cable type or length! I swopped from cat5 to cat6. No difference! Now I am on wireless! Please try my suggestion. Do you have Asset UPnP? If you do, don't use iRadio input. Go to 'UPnP' input and select 'internet radio'. It works fine with my UniQute and Uniti. No buffer problems!

With Asset UPnP, I managed to find Linn Jazz and, as I am typing, I am listening to 320 kbps jazz!! Thanks for recommending me Linn Radio!

It sounds like although you have a "fast" internet connection you also have one which isn't very consistent ... does this apply to *ALL* 320kbps stations? Can I assume that lower bitrate stations are able to play more consistently?
The Uniti and Qute have buffer memory of only a few seconds at 320kbits and so if the data flow to the Uniti is not consistent enough then the Uniti is unable to replenish its buffer as it plays. Your PC is able to allocate more buffer space to this - probably taking into account that it needs to pre-buffer more data to allow for lags and pauses in the streamed data from your ISP.
Where are you in the world and who do you use as your ISP?
Phil

There are a number of reasons that can contribute to being unable to maintain a constant stream from a streaming audio source - many beyond the control of the end user.
The Uniti / Qute / NDX are more than capable of streaming 320kbps Internet Radio sources however if the data that is reaching them is not consistent enough then there is little that they can do to remedy that. The original poster has tried hard wiring the unit to his router which removes wireless issues from the equation and Ethernet Over Powerline devices really should be a last resort - they introduce "noise" onto the mains in quite significant quantities.
Using something like AssetUPnP to pre-buffer the data is hardly elegant however it's a good workaround if it solves the issue for the original poster.
Cheers
