35mm scanner recommendations!

Posted by: Tony2011 on 01 July 2014

I have a large batch of 35mm negatives that I'd like to transfer to digital format.
I was thinking  of purchasing a Nikon coolscan but they are not cheap and I'll probably never use it again. Any advice or alternative would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

They are not cheap but if you have a finite number of negs to scan, you could probably sell it on for as much as you paid!

There are apparently a couple of decent (but pricey) regular epson flatbed scanners which come with strip holders and some people use well. Can't remember modle numbers but I'm sure if you google it you'll come across them

Received wisdom has it that buying a Nikon Coolscan secondhand, use it for the scanning project and then selling the device will only cost you the lost of interest on the money plus selling fees.

Thank you Jamie and Derek.

Looks like investing in one and pass it on seems to be the logical thing to do. I'm inclined to buy the 5000ED as it comes with a good software, despite its age, that help remove light scratches and sort of "revive" old negatives. Although all the negatives were kept in suitable polyester sleeves, filed  and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, some are over 40 years old and will probably need some  further digital restoration. That will keep me busy for a while. Time to go shopping.

Once again, many thanks.

You can still get new software for the Nikon Coolscans - produced by SilverFast, apparently better than the original. I have a Coolscan, but the original software won't work on Mac OS Mavericks, and Nikon have stopped upgrading it, so I suppose I'll have to get SilverFast. A friend of mine has a German Reflecta, with automatic scanning of whole batches of slides - works faster, but a bit pricey.

Hi, Frenchnaim.

I  know the Mac OS software is not so editing-friendly and for the benefit  of keeping things as simple as possible I might use a PC for the job. I appreciate your input though.

Many thanks,

Tony
