threads for newbies

Posted by: playmookie27 on 07 July 2014

Greetings. I am a traditional Naim owner (CD5i, Nait5i) thinking of moving into streaming audio and servers. Are there any threads for beginners? Also, as I live in Canada, I believe my server and streamer options may be limited, due to unresolved copyright issues. Thanks.

No, there should be no issues with availability.  A SuperUniti might be a nice step up from your NAIT 5i while you get your feet wet with streaming!

Hi there - I had a quick look using the 'searcch' facility - 'Streaming for Beginners' - it throws up lots of people at the same stage as you asking similar questions.

Having moved over from cd myself not that long ago I think you will find it reasonably straightforward, and certainly rewarding.

Enjoy the journey!

I am, or was, a traditional Naim owner, with a CDS2, 82/250 and NAT02, and also a bit dim when it comes to computer and network stuff. Just over a year ago I sold the lot and bought a SuperUniti and UnitiServe, and after a few teething troubles it has worked wonderfully. All the music is there via the iPad, and there is no cd clutter.

The cheapest way to go is via the ND5xs. You'd then need a NAS to hold your music, and suitable programs on your computer to rip and tag the music. There's a lot to be said for the UnitiServe, which is a great solution, but I have a feeling from what you have now that it might be a bit too pricey. If not, do have a look at it. You just pop the cd in, and a few minutes later it's filed away and ready to play, with no computer in sight.

Or the unitilite then you can still play your CD's.

The unitiqute is the cheapest though and if you add the NAP100 you have a really nice system.

If you're going to enter the streaming world, free yourself of cd replay.  I've not played a cd in well over a year.  (There is a Naim cd player on my Fraim, but it has not been powered ON in over a year.)  I have found no occasion to play a cd; I rip it and then play it from my server.  I suppose that if a friend came over with a stack of cd's I wanted to listen to, I'd probably power up the cd player.

I have no friends . . . .

*edit* I do have friends, with music.  They bring over hard drives.  Really.

the Unitilite gives you a safety net whilst learning streaming (which is good).

The UnitiQute2 is the least expensive way of getting into Naim sound and integrated multi-room setup (but adding a grands worth of mini-monitors plus cable brings it to near £2500) until Muso, and if you do NOT add a NAP100 you have a really nice system, you don't need to add anything but speakers to a Qute to get really high quality music replay. Qute by name, cute by nature!

+1

I have a UQ2 and it is fantastic without the addition of the NAP 100. Just add some good speakers and enjoy the music.
