Unplugged recommendations

Posted by: Ebor on 11 July 2014

Enjoying Eric Clapton's Unplugged this afternoon, I wondered if there were any other unplugged albums which were equally enjoyable. a quick search in the usual places turned up a large number, both from individual artists and a few Unplugged compilations as well. So many that i'd be interested in specific recommendations from the assembled company. Are the compilations a good place to start, or are there individual artists' recordings which work so well as albums that they surpass the compilations?

These albums are up there with Eric Clapton's "Unplugged". IMHO.

Don't know how to do photos of album sleeves but......

Nirvana Unplugged in New York is possibly their best album

The new R.E.M. one is good too.

Are we just talking acoustic albums from artists that normally record electrified?

In that case.....

Eels with strings at town hall.

One of their best, I reckon.

Knowing you're a man of impeccable taste Michael, I've just ordered a copy. 39p from Amazon. Well, thought I'd push the boat out on this one.

What a bargain Tony! The lyrics of Kurt Kobain are so powerful when the music is stripped back to its bare bones.

Yes indeed Mike. Thanks for introducing me to this which contains a beautifully stripped back version of Nirvana's 'Heart-Shaped Box' by Asgeir.

There are enough gems among the 40 tracks to make it worth having for me. And there are other older similar session CD's available. Those Auntie Beeb engineers can still crank out a 'proper' recording.

This one is quite good as well.

+1 to 10,000 Maniacs and Neil Young Unplugged as well.

This is Neil Young at his acoustic best in a hall with great acoustics.  A must have!

Not an MTV unplugged album, but Polly Paulusma the alternative folk singer does unplugged, acoustic versions of her albums which add a super sense of realism and emotion to her already life-like and dynamic studio recordings. Her latest The Small Featuring of My Reverie is a case in point, sponsored through Pledge Music.

I have only a handful of Unpluggeds, but Clapton and Nirvana are easily my favorites.

Although they pre-date MTV, much less the Unplugged series, I would point music lovers to two of my favorites records which were somewhat uncharacteristic for artists most well known for loud, and very electric rock.    The first is the acoustic half of Neil Young's superb late 70's record Rust Never Sleeps which includes some of his finest ballads.    The other album is the Dead's 1980 live recording Reckoning, which was taken entirely from a series of shows they played in the fall of 1980 which were intended to celebrate their 15th year together.    As a fun extra, since the shows were played in small theaters in San Francisco and Radio City in NY- almost a small hall for a band who was regularly playing the arenas in that era- they added an acoustic set to their normal two set electric show format for those shows only.    Reckoning is beautifully recorded, perhaps the best sounding of any of the Dead's massive live output, and available on superb vinyl reissues these days if you prefer LP's.

Good listening!
