DSD on Unitiserve

Posted by: stebro on 17 July 2014

I have the Unitiserve 2TB and an Auralic Vega DAC (which is capable of handling DSD).  If I burn a DSD disc onto the Unitiserve, will it be stored and play back through the Vega in DSD format?  Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm not that technically knowledgable.

Still oving the Unitiserve (even after tediously burning almost 800 CD with many more to go).

I'm also sure US will not playback DSD-files.

what I do wonder is if it would be possible to convert dsd-files into DoP-format beforehand?

The DoP-format is in fact just a 176.4 kHz file, albeit with some special coding to indicate it is DoP, so any player should be able to play it just as a 176.4 PCM And the receiving DAC should be able to detect it is in fact a DoP it has been offered.

anybody heared about something like this?

Aleg - The process you describe is exactly the workaround used by some in the Squeezebox and other communities. One has to convert the DSD files (DSF or DFF) to DoP FLAC files using Foobar. As a FLAC file it can then be sent to a DoP compliant DAC. From this the DAC then knows to decode it as native DSD.

It is a bit of a faff but easily doable. If I can do it anyone can. I tried it with some free DSD test tracks to see if it worked with my SBT and Hugo. Which it does. And the resultant playback sounds excellent.

There is a thorough walk through on the AudioCircle forum in the 'How to Use the Squeezebox Touch to play DSD files on a DoP compatible DAC' thread.

Also on the squeezebox forum in the Touch section 'DSD downloads from Acoustic Sounds w/ Touch' thread.
