Time to unload the DVD5?
Posted by: Mr Underhill on 18 March 2011
I have the Oppo 83, and think that it is brilliant for BR and SD DVD ....BUT, the DVD5 still wins on audio.
I can sell the DVD5 for a fraction of what it cost, or I could keep it JUST for playing my audio DVDs; I have built up a collection of PCM DVDs for playing back through my nDAC.
...or I could rip the DVDs and clear a shelf.
Decisions!

i keep mine mainly as my primary source for cds because it is just too good a cdp to give away as a mere "naim dvdp".

I use an Oppo 83SE for my video needs, but have kept my DVD5 as a transport for the nDAC. Superb!

If you can only get pennies for it, you might as well keep it IMO. Could come in handy as a back up if you have problems with your Oppo and still want to play DVDs.

I am of the same opinion and i have purchased the 93 for BD playback, i was also considering the 95 for the audio but so far not convinced that it will get anywhere near the DVD5 as audio CD playback!.
I now have the chance of a CD5XS which is only 5-6 weeks old and i can PX my DVD5 for a chunk of it,what do you think?should go for it, do you think i would regret it or not?.
Best Regards.

I have ripped all my CDs, and got a result that renders the DVD5 redundant, although I agree it is the best DVD player I have heard at playing CDs.
v_j_r, personally I would PX the DVD5.
I think I will buy an HDMI switch, and retain the DVD5 for the moment,

DVD5 for a CD5xs? You would need to do the side-by-side, but I prefered the DVD5 over the CD5i by a lot and preferred the DVD5 over the CD5x (different style but still liked the DVD5 more).
I think selling a DVD5 is an option if you are going to really go all the way to a far superior CDP or want to go a completely different route (like streaming etc.). But unless it's a real upgrade, I would keep it. Might come in handy for a second system one day.

Hmmmm interesting do you think there will be a huge difference with CD5XS and the DVD5's CD capabilities?, it is more of an upgrade and being in a position of buying a 5 week old CD5XS and PX the DVD5.I think selling a DVD5 is an option if you are going to really go all the way to a far superior CDP or want to go a completely different route (like streaming etc.). I appreciate your views i have a hard decision to make me thinks.

v_j_r,
Sorry, can I clarify - I would PX the DVD5 if you think what you are changing to is an upgrade. I have no experience of the CD5 series.

If you can stretch to it, keep the DVD5 and get a nDAC. That is a DEFINITE upgrade. Would be worthwhile trying your Oppo into the nDAC and if you like the result then selling your DVD5, although I think the DVD5 is better as a transport than the Oppo.

Keep the DVD5. Regardless of the advances made with new video formats, the DVD5 was primarily conceived as a DVD player that majored on making music. The fact that it was also gave a fantastic picture (albeit in standard def) was just a bonus in my eyes. I could happily live with a DVD5 as a CD player, and indeed have done so in another system. It kind of reminds me of my old CDX, which is one way of saying it sounds great! However, feed it a hi-res audio disc, whether DVD-A or DAD and it can be mind-blowingly good. I once did a comparison using a Neil Young CD/DAD release, feeding the DVD5 withthe 24bit 96kHz DAD, and a CD555 with the CD. Both were fabulous, but the hi-res issue via the DVD5 showed its superiority in a number of areas. Trying it with a different DVD player and the CD555 walked it, no contest. Oh, and it makes a nice transport for the DAC too. In fact, the only issue is that being a DVD player, rather than a CD player, it's just a little bit slow in the control responses.

Dungassin:
If that is aimed at me, got one; and yes, it does work well with the nDAC ....but not as well as my CMP configured laptop, and even less well when compared to my new NS01.
Richard:
I agree ....but, ripped all my DVD-As.
I'll still probably keep it - but I'll have to buy an HDMI switch, and the ONLY thing it will be used for will be audio DVDs .....and musicals.

Just checked your profile. Why an NS01? Are you planning on a multiroom setup? Just curious ...
Me, I'm still at the debating stage : ?555PS for nDAC, ?better CD transport, ?HDX or Unitiserve (SSD)

Hi Dun,
It was on sale ex-dem.
Did a comparison with a UnitiServe. The advice I got was US, my ears preferred the NS01 - but I could understand other people opting the other way.
Listening to some great music! And just did the easiest set of rips I've ever done.
The NS01 is no more of a server than the HDX. No screen - but that's not needed by me. I can't add a PSU to the NS01, but I wouldn't if I could.
I did consider the SSD, but I like having some local resilient discs - for when things inevitably go wrong.
I've done a review on the Streaming Audio forum.
I'll be be looking at a PSU for the nDAC next year.

Did a search for NS01 but didn't find your thread. What's it called?

Thanks. The forums search engine didn't find that thread with the search criterion "NS01"
Posted on: 28 March 2011 by Mr Underhill
Well that's hardly surprising - nothing like!!
Might explain why I didn't find many posts.
Got to say it is sounding better and better.
I bought an HDMI switch and plumbed the DVD5 back in.

strange, because most search engines would find such a string (minus the quotation marks, of course). Perhaps it was because the NS01 wasn't a discreet word.
