Posted by: fathings cat on 21 March 2011
Having just ripped c1200 cd's to my NAS drive via my Serve would it be possible to get my i tunes to see read/import them from the NAS to my IMac - A tad lazy but it feels a bit of a chore to rip them all to my Imac....
Any help would be appreciated

Sorry no, itunes cannot read the rip data properly so you will most likely land up with hundreds of unnamed files, or perhaps a song title but no album data etc.

Thanks Gary, that's a shame, more ripping it is........

Can you not just use something like dBpoweramp to convert them?

needs to be XLD for a mac - converts each file in seconds. Free download too.

If your nas supports it, it can be displayed as a home share drive on iTunes.
Synology works this way.

Ihau - do you know if RipNas does as well?

Will XLD convert them and re tag them though this is the question?

Couple of things to try before you re rip. In iTunes - preferences - advanced you can set the location of you music folder - you can set this to your NAS and see what happens. Just jot down the original location of the folder that you have moved away from so you know where to go back to if necessary.
Like the other responses - depending in the NAS iTunes may find it for you if it shares itself. I know when I was in a dealers settling up iTunes and airports etc to test a Dac that I found their rip NAS thing. You may want to check that home sharing is on iTunes.
The other thing you may try is the 'add to library' option - you should be able to pick a whole folder and import into iTunes - but this may defeat having having a NAS - have fun

I believe what you will land up with is an unusable mess though.
iTunes will quite happily play the tracks but they will not be tagged either correctly or at all.

Thanks folks, really helpful - I'll report back.
On a different note if I download a high res track where would I have to save it to play via serve/ndac?

iTunes can handle high res tracks so you can store them alongside your other music wherever that is. In the view menu you can have options to show the sample rate of the file that you are using. Flac has to be converted to Alac though using something like the max software that Linn recommends. I have iTunes providing 24 bit 48k wavs from bleep.com as well as Mozart from HDtracks 24bit 98k Alac.

The serve aggregates all music it can find on the network. Just create a share on your nas called music and stick it in there.
