How easy is it to change upnp on a NAS ?

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 04 August 2014

Dear Forum

I curently have a QNAP NAS running Twonky, with about 1,300 flac ripped cd's and a few hi-res downloads.

Whilst I don't seem to have a lot of the wonky twonky issues mentioned here, I'm thinking about trying Asset given all of the strong recommendations that it gets.

A concern is, as a relatively inexperienced IT person, how easy is it to get Asset to work once installed? Once 'directed' to my Z drive/NAS will it automatically sort my library, or is there a lot of manual sorting, etc. that may be more demanding? Will it recognise all of my music, albums, info/artwork, etc.? Or am I best just carrying on with Twonky given it seems to work OK for me.

Thanks for any advice.

Regards

Nigel

It's actually very easy once asset is installed. it is a manual install so slightly more complex than choosing an app directly but there is  good instructions on the asset website.

once it's installed you hit "launch" and this opens the asset control page, it usually guesses the correct location but you may have to specify if you use a sub-folder.

then asset scans your music and in a few hours it is all playable through asset. You can leave twonky in place also so there is no hassle if you don't like assest.

as i posted in another thread i have asset and twonky and Logitech media server all running on the same qnap 412.

it's really nothing to be afraid of.

Before you do any of this, make sure you have a recent backup of the NAS contents incase things don't go quite to plan

Good point, but don't be unnecessarily frightening Nigel. I forgot to ask are you on QTS version 4 or greater? QTS is the QNAP interface for the NAS - if you're on 4 the picture in my previous post will be familiar. What NAS do you have?

Thanks for the responses.

I took a back up a week or two ago, so that should be fine. I think that it's a QNAP TS-212 with 2 x 2 Tb disks in it. I also updated the firmware a week or so ago, so think that it's version 4 or more, but will check.

Do I need to download asset to my laptop from the QNAP website first, or can it be done by logging into the NAS directly?

Thanks again for the help.

OK, I .think I get it now. Download Asset from the same website I got dBpoweramp from, onto my laptop. Manually install to the QNAP, and then 'launch', and ASSET does the rest.

Will give it a try tomorrow, and post back aftervthat.

Thanks again.

I don't know if you realise, but you can run both Asset and Twonky side-by-side, and even add MinimServer in to the mix and have three media servers for comparison!

I run Twonky for Films and Asset for Music on my TS-412U and it works great.

I've managed to download Asset to the QNAP, however it hasn't picked up where my music is stored.

SJB said " it usually guesses the correct location but you may have to specify if you use a sub-folder". I've tried to do this but failed miserably.

Can anyone help - how do I determine the proper sub-folder name/location.

Your help would be appreciated as I've now wasted 45 mins on this and am no further forward ! !

Thanks

Anyone able to help ?

Please !

Hi Nigel

funilly enough, just installed MinimServer on my nas today. Synology DS213+

the 1st thing I had to do after successful installation was to tell MinimServer where my music is located. Via settings, I set the following

\volume1\music

you probably need to do the same but i have no experience with qnap or asset. I'm sure this is the issue.

Should be plain sailing from there.  Hopefully their online forum, instructions should point this out.

good luck.

Hi again

Well, I've now found a folder that has a lot more music in. However, there's still a problem in that It's telling me that I have about 34,000 tracks.

I also have Twonky installed so I know that I should have around 17,500 tracks - there must be a huge amount of duplication !

Any ideas on how to solve this ?

Thanks

My flac files are in qnap\multimedia\music\flac which is what I point asset to

If I just chose qnap\multimedia\music all my iTunes tracks would be included. the issue is probably something like this.

Surely this stuff is
"Plug and Play". Universal. too

Although you can have lots of servers running side by side, this is not a good idea. They will reguarly check and rescan the music folder, which can land up with conflicts and drop outs if other servers are trying to access the music.

By all means have them installed but switch off the ones you are not using.

I'm a bit mystified by all this but willing to learn.

I have all my music files on a Buffalo Terastation.  Two of them, actually, with one backing-up to the other.

I have no idea whether the Buffalos have Asset, Twonky, or something else or nothing at all.  Nor do I have any idea whether I should worry about this.

I have a Naim HDX which sees all my music files without any problem, and this is true whether or not they are files that I have used the HDX to rip in the first place (I have also ripped some with dBPoweramp, or bought downloads).

I also use Sonos in some parts of the house and it too finds all my music, albeit I had to re-tag all the files ripped on my HDX.

Am I just a happy beneficiary of UPnP and can I safely ignore this stuff about Asset, Twonky, etc?

Well, I managed to get my problems with Asset sorted out, and as I thought it was more to do with my ignorance of how a NAS works that the software. Anyway, I now have both Asset and Twonky installed, and both are recognising the correct number of albums and tracks - phew.

I've used Asset for a while now, and I have to say that it seems extremely, painfully slow. May just have something to do with the memory available in my QNAP TS-212 but it is incredibly frustrating. I also don't see that it's layout, functions, etc are any more appealing that QNAPs own UPnP system or Twonky.

My conclusion is that on my network, NAS, etc Twonky is the preferred server.

Thanks to everyone that tried to help me out, Nigel

Indeed I think the latest version of Twonky is much improved on earlier ones.

Why ill I will buy asset when my 30 day trial ends is

  1. Replay gain. Playlists are important to me and I don't want to have to higher up the volume on a track from a 80's CD only to practically blow my speaker with the next track. Hugely important to me for my enjoyment of the extras streaming brings to the party.
  2. Transcoding. Asset can transcode flac to wav on the fly and with Naim streamers this apparently can bring sonic improvements. I have not done a vs b but in the same way that I dim the lights I like to be able to transcode.
  3. Dynamic browsing and the ability to search by year - sometimes I just want to go back to 1978!

SJB, you may find these of benefit too,

Asset also has customisable navigation trees on NStream, ideal when you want to structure your music collection library the way you want it.

The full version of Asset  has per endpoint/media player configuration. This allows transcoding to WAV for your Naim with full menus, and transcoding to mp3 with simplified menus for your portable Pure radio device for example.

Asset can harmonize artist meta tags, so for example Beatles and The Beatles appear as one. There are also configurable settings on how to handle multi discs and compilations and how they are displayed in Nstream.

Asset allows transcoding of ALAC and AIFF to WAV.. Useful for those Apple collections to be played into Naim.

Finally the Windows version of Asset allows ypu to stream PC audio to your Naim.

I had a look at the customisable menu trees that they didn't seem to do too much so I may have missed something, must have another look at this.

Give minimserver a try. Running perekt on my qnap 412. Asset is also very slow on my qnap.

Posted on: 22 August 2014 by Sloop John B

Minim Server does not do replay gain.

I just bought the premium registered version of asset for qnap. If you already own dbpoweramp and retrieve license from the end of the product page you are usually given deals on other products. I got the premium for €12 - a 50% discount.

@Simon

If you could upload a screenshot (or 2)  of how you edit the browse tree I would appreciate it as a guide to what can be done here.

thanks
