Home Network Options - Stupid Question?

Posted by: Gavin B on 11 August 2014

There are two phone 'entry' points in my house - one in the kitchen and one in the lounge.  The previous owner had his router in the kitchen, and I have mine in the lounge.  Is there any kit that will allow me to use both to provide a better wireless signal in the kitchen (using this second phone point)?

I suspect this is a stupid question, but one that nonetheless keeps popping into my mind.

I don't think so ( but I could be wrong too!)

if i were you I'd plug the router into the 1st socket where the phone line enters the house, then maybe get a wireless repeater or bite the bullet and drill holes / string a load of ethernet cable around (as I did). I looked into bodging old routers into repeaters but gave up as I wanted as few cheap PSUs in the house as poss.

Not such a good idea to have numbers of branches to extra entry points,  it can cause wireless hub issues, especially so if not done correctly.

I had a whole load of cables around the house when I was working from home with 2 phones, fax & other stuff.  I then had a year or two with wireless problems & eventually a telecoms engineer advised to get rid of the mess & use just a single entry.  BT man arrived ripped it all out & it fixed the problems (that I had at that time)  -

When my son had BT Infinity installed,  the engineer could not get it to work until he realised he was working off a secondary branch & that was not the main entry point.

I would get one removed & make sure the remaining single is installed correctly,  then if better wireless is needed add a wireless range extender,  & best use the same brand as the wireless hub.

We have a 3 storey house. Router was on the ground floor and the signal on the top floor was iffy at times.Just bought a more powerful Router in PC World. Ours is made by a mob called Netgear.

Job done.

Thanks folks - you've helped clear a small 'itch' burrowing in my brain.

My router is a Netgear one too.  I'll look into getting a wireless range extended.
