Slow Searching Meta Data

Posted by: Mike-B on 11 August 2014

I have a problem getting nStream to find meta data, its very slow & has a message "searching for meta data". when slow,  or just "no results found" & refuses to search.

Once (if) its found,  it can be slow to build pages each & every time I hit the Info button, then after a while its OK, until the next time.

It was 100% OK from new since April,  but its started messing around over the last week or so.

Not sure if I'm guilty of changing something, but if I have I don't know what.

I've cleared both nStream caches

Any ideas ???

Has happened to me from time to time, Mike. I had put that down to my rather peculiar way of naming albums, that can sometimes confuse Rovi. Or to exotic albums. Or to Rovi working on their database maintenance. Doesn't happen very often, and usually doesn't last long in my experience.

I think it might be Rovi fiddling around m0omo0,    it seems to have gone normal now.  I doubt it's my album names as the problems tonight were straight CD rips as they were set automatically by dBpoweramp, now I'm playing a Hi-res download with no mods.

I will keep an eye on it & see if we get any more ideas or suggestions from other forum'ites.

Hey Mike,

i have the similar situation since a few days. I have a QNAP, a wired network and state of the art switch etc .... The metadata searches forever. I doubt it is my equipment. Is something wrong with Rovi ?

Posted on: 12 August 2014 by m0omo0

Iver, right now the metadata on n-Stream doesn't work, and if you look at the AllMusic site, it's broken as well.

They're fiddling with their site very often in my experience, though it doesn't systematically reflect on n-Stream. Disconcerting.

 Thanks for sharing your experience(s).

I have the same again tonite. It seems to be with Rovi & it's a relief that it's nothing wrong or wrongly adjusted with our equipment.  I guess we have to be patient.

Yup, Rovi is crippled again tonight. It certainly hasn't been fit for purpose for a few days now.

Posted on: 13 August 2014 by Mike-B

This is now getting unacceptable.

Problem is although I don't use metadata that often, now I know its not working its become an itch that I need to scratch.

I can't find anything on www about Rovi or other metadata news that reflects whats going on over these last few days,  but interestingly I found an old Naim forum thread from 1 year ago with exactly the same problem. - https://forums.naimaudio.com/topic/on-line-metadata

So it makes me wonder why we have not heard anything from Naim,  just a note to say they are aware & this is what to do or we are working with who/what/ever.

Hey!!!  just sent the above,  now its working OK.

Mike,

You're making me feel very pleased that I went the MacMini/iTunes/Audirvana/Hugo route. All these nStream problems I can happily live without.

It didn't work yesterday, but is fine now. All very mysterious.

Better still = old fashioned sleeve notes in a 12x12 folder

The LP is still my favourite medium, as you know Mike.

Steve, to be fair these are not really "n-Stream problems": it's not about the metadata that lives inside the files, its about the facility to read AllMusic notes about an album within n-Stream. The music playing works fine. You would probably have the same problem if you wanted to access the AllMusic site with the web browser on your Mac to read the same information.

Anyway, Rovi are fiddling their AllMusic site all the time, and sometimes -- apparently more and more often -- it shows in n-Stream. I don't think Naim could really do anything about it unless they have a proper SLA, but it's still annoying.

On another note, I read that yesterday was 512K Day, namely the day the Internet reached 512K network routes. This apparently causes problems to some Internet infrastructure routers and many still need patching.

Not sure whether and how it is related but I guess it doesn't help.

To be honest m0omo0 I rarely read the liner notes etc. If I want any info it's just as quick to use Google.

I understand Steve, and Google would send you right to the AllMusic site !

The itch is, in n-Stream, it's just a tap on the "i" icon away, so why not ?

Rovi hasn't been working for me for the last couple of weeks or so. Be patient, it'll (probably) get better.
