Album artwork moving around on nStream/Asset

Posted by: DaveM6 on 12 August 2014

Hi guys, I am currently using assetNAS v4 on an AssetNAS NAS and the latest version of nStream, and ripping using DBpoweramp CD ripper.  Never had any issues with nStream displaying the album artwork before, but for some reason the artwork displayed under the 'All Artists' list in nStream has started to display incorrectly.  i do have some albums with no artwork which I will sort with MP3Tag at some point so don't know if this is part of the problem.

The problem occurs when I first access nStream and also when I move from the 'All Artists' list to a specific album and back again.  What happens is that some of the album artwork displays incorrectly.  For example, the albums with no artwork, display the artwork from other albums. And on some of the other albums which displayed correct artwork now display the wrong artwork, e.g. The Killers shows artwork for Everything but the girl!  But this then might change again when I move between 'All Artists' to an album and back again.  For example, The Killers now shows artwork for Maroon 5!  This only happens in the 'All Artists' list.  The artwork is correct against each album.

I have searched on this forum and the DBpoweramp forum for similar problems, so have checked that the correct .jpg folders are showing in the music folders, refreshed/rescanned Asset, looked at Asset configuration and cleared the cache on nStream but the problem persists.  Not sure if it is nStream or Asset, so will post a query on the DBpoweramp forum depending on responses here.

Streamer is an NDX - software v3.13.  Really should upgrade to latest version!

Any guidance/help would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Dave

Try a 2nd Control Point, to browse the same pages, such as Kinsky as a test, it will narrow down which component is not working.

Many thanks.  I have downloaded Kinsky to my iPhone.  Now, under 'All Artists' the albums without artwork are showing the 'blue disc' logo as you would expect.  However, there are albums that do have artwork in the music folder which are also showing the 'blue disc' logo.  For example, The Jayhawks is showing the 'blue disc' logo in the "All Artists' list but when I display the individual albums in Kinsky it shows the artwork against each album.  Just doesn't show it against the artist under 'All Artists.'  Again, this is only on a few albums, most albums with artwork show artwork under the 'All Artists' list.  So I am wondering if there is a metadata issue with some of the albums I ripped?  Any thoughts?  Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Please do update your unit to 3.22 as a matter of urgency - 3.16 is very old and there have been a number of enhancements / fixes made to cover art handling since then...

Cheers

Many thanks, Phil.  I have been very lazy in not doing the various software updates!!……life and all that!!  Will download and apply the sequential software updates and confirm if this sorts things.  May be a few days before I get round to it, though, but I definitely will do it!  Thanks again to you and mrspoon for your help.  Cheers.  Dave

You should be fine just applying the 3.22 update...

Phil, Just realised I need to purchase a USB to R232 serial converter to do the update, so will purchase one shortly with the appropriate Prolific chipset.

Cheers.

Hi,

i am having a similar issue with my UQ2 and nStream. My server is a MacBook Pro running MadiaCenter 19. The issue does not exist when using PS Audio's ELyric control point software. The problem disappears when clearing the cover image cache in the nStream menu. As soon as I am adding new music, the cover issue comes back.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Phil/Mrspoon.  I have now updated the NDX software to 3.22 and this has resolved incorrect artwork showing against albums in the All Artists list.  However, I am still experiencing the following problems:

1. Certain albums have artwork showing against the individual album but the artwork is not showing on the All Artists list against the artist.  This is the case using nStream and Kinsky.

2. On nStream all artists starting with 'The', e.g. The Cranberries are showing under 'T'.  On Kinsky they are showing under the main letter, e.g. C for The Cranberries (this is how I want them to display).  On DBPoweramp CD Ripper I have the 'PerfectMeta Options' set to 'Replace 'The (Artist)' with '(Artist), The', so not sure what is happening here on nStream?

Have looked at settings for Asset (v4) on my AssetNAS (which are basically the default settings) and cannot see any obvious issue - although I am not an expert in these things!

Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Do you mean that by the artist names when the artist names list is shown you're not getting any artwork? If so then this is normal as there's no "artist" graphic.

n-Stream by default alphabetically sorts its lists - to prevent this simply turn on the "UPnP Compatibility" option in the n-Stream settings menu.

Thanks for the reply, Phil.  I'll change re point 2, thanks.

Re point 1, don't think I have described this very well!  I'll try and explain using examples.

In nStream, when I select 'All Artists' I get a list of artists and against each artist it displays artwork (I'm guessing this is either artwork from the first or last album ripped for that artist).  So, for example, against Mazzy Star in the 'All Artists' list it shows the artwork for the album 'Among my Swan'.  When I select Mazzy Star from the 'All Artists' list, it shows the two albums I have for them 'Among my Swan' and 'She Hangs Brightly' with the artwork shown against each album.

However, this is not the case for other artists.  For example, in the 'All Artists' list against The Jayhawks no album artwork is shown.  When I select The Jayhawks from the 'All Artists' list and display the individual albums (of which there are 7), artwork is showing against each album as you would expect.

So my query was around why some artists in the 'All Artists' list show artwork (from one of the albums ripped) against the artist as in the Mazzy Star example above but others don't as per the Jayhawks example.

Hopefully this is a bit clearer but I appreciate it is difficult to put these things into words sometimes!

Thanks.

Dave

This could be due to the fact that Asset is picking up artwork from a different album where the artist appears, e.g. on a various artists album.

Asset I believe uses the first found album for its upstream artwork.

I worked round this by splitting out all my various artists albums into a separate share and listing them second in the list of folders to scan.

Thanks, Richard.  Unfortunately, not sure this is the case for me as I don't have any various artists albums ripped at the moment. I will just double check, though!

Thanks again for your reply.

Richard,

Your reply is very interesting. I'm using Asset on my QNAP and I've noticed that for artists who only appear on compilations there is no artwork in the "Artist" view but there will be artwork for other artists on the same compilations if I have other albums by them.

What Richard posted bears repeating.  "Do you mean that by the artist names when the artist names list is shown you're not getting any artwork? If so then this is normal as there's no "artist" graphic."

There is no graphic for the artists when using the artist names list.  That is how n-Stream works.  If something is 'leaking through' such as a graphic from one of that artist's albums, so be it.  But when you see a gray box with no graphic for artists in the artist names list, it's working (or not) as intended.

If you're still having problems try deleting the app and reloading it. Cheers

Thanks everyone for your replies - so what is happening is how Asset works.  I was just confused by the inconsistency with artist graphics, but appreciate now that Asset does not have an artist graphic, so the ones I'm seeing are 'leaking through' as Bart puts it.

Many thanks again to all who have helped with this.

Cheers.
