uploading music to a synology diskstation
Posted by: diverdocrog on 29 August 2014
Hi Guys
Anybody using a Synology diskstation to act as a NAS for streaming purposes? I used to use a buffalo but that blew up. For some reason I am unable to upload music in folders by artist name from my macbook (individual songs work fine). The music is stored in an external hard drive, some 600G's of it. Using an NDS and what a fantastic bit of admittedly expensive kit that is. The buffalo did not cause any uploading difficulties so wonder what the problem is. I am sure I am doing something stupid...
It should be so easy you don't need to think about it
Can you see them with the Mac, not sure how a Mac works but I can view them in Windows Explorer in "Network"
You should have 3x Synology preloaded sections, Music Photos & Video,
Where do you drop (load) the files ? into Music ??
Are your files named by artist > album title
Which of the Synology packages have you installed ....... I have Audio Station, Media Server & Download, I don't actually use Download as such & load everything thru the PC Network folder.
I know it should be easy
when I try and drop a folder labelled by the artists name (with a number of other folders with various albums from that artist) into the music preloaded section I initially get a message of 'drop files here' but when I try to drop this folder it says 'you cannot upload folders' it will upload individual songs ok but this is not what I want to do
still unclear what I am doing wrong
Create a file share to the drive and upload the folders (and files) directly, the media server will still auto-index them. Mine works best this way.
It sounds like you are trying to upload via a web interface.
The NAS should show up directly on the mac. From the mac desktop open up the harddrive. On the left hand side of the hard drive is 'Favourites', 'Devices', and 'Shared'
Your NAS will show up and shared. Select it. Depending on how you set the nas up you will either now see the shares, or you will need to enter a user name and password.
If you are new to macs and cannot see the harddrive icon, goto finder>preferences and turn on the view of it and connected servers.
thank you so much yes that works. Now I have a new problem via my ipad n-stream UPNP shows no servers! any suggestions?
Have you installed the Synology Audio Station & Media Server & have NDS set to DHCP ???
nStream set to
Auto Connect - on
Stay Connected - off
UNup Compatibility - off
Then reboot NDS & Synology, nStream UPnP should see them (it might take a few moments to find)
Thank you again
The problem was not having media server installed not obvious given I had already installed the recommended downloads
Why do they have to make it so difficult it could easily be part of the DSM do you not think
Good question. Maybe its not required as a "must have" install for the majority of the NAS user world - PC etc, but I would have thought it a prerequisite for music & video & an install question that does it as part of the install.
I note its not high on the packages list, its sort of a few pages down & only a small sized icon.
When I installed mine I used the CD & pressed all the buttons that seemed to be required. I then got into selecting what I thought was needed, I knew for sure I needed a Media Server & was intending to install Asset, but a week or so beforehand I was advised against that as Synology do not support it, & TBH have never found anything to complain about with it.
You will next need to get into the optional selecting stuff like transcoding to WAV (if you save to FLAC or another lossless codec) But thats another chapter - enjoy what you have for now.
Thank you again

Synology NAS can be used for many purposes, I would suggest that UPnP streaming is probably less that 50%.
The principle is that the main install pack installs the OS, but puts the applications on the disk so they can be activated as required. The user than activates only the application they require.
If Synology arranged for ALL the applications to be installed, then for most hardware it wouldn't have enough resources (free RAM, CPU availability etc.) to do any work!
Installing only the applications you need allows them to work better.
