What spec Mac mini?
Posted by: BigH47 on 03 September 2014
ATM I have my iMac controlling the music on my server mainly AIFF/m4a (ALAC?) using iTunes, the iMac is beginning to play up so I thought I would separate music and use a mac mini, as in the title what spec?
I am thinking of getting rid of the CDS2 and getting a Hugo (if it sounds OK).
I seem to remember that there was version of MM that upgraded the optical, are there any problems with earlier versions re the USB output?
If MM is just dealing with music how much memory is needed?
Any other recommendations, hints also appreciated.
Ethernet I should imagine.
Yep. The remote app and screen sharing (and indeed file transfer between macs) will work if they are all part of the same network (I.e. the same SSID).
I use a reasonable quality Ethernet cable from my router to the MM (Audioquest Pearl). Haven't bothered experimenting as don't belie e there is a great deal of data traffic, even when using internet radio)

Guys,
I have received my new version of Mac Mini modified linear power supply and its dedicated DC power supply. To summarize it is one the biggest upgrade I have ever done to my source. It is even better than the experience of adding a Stello U3 to the mini and definitely far better than increasing the RAM and SSD on the mini. The improvement is more like changing to a new DAC. From the moment of plugging in, you can immediately feel the noise floor become very much lower and a darker background which render the voice and instruments sound more alive and airy. The reverb of the recording ambiance is now able to re-produce clearer than before. The sound seems to fly out of the speakers cabinet effortlessly by projecting a larger soundstaging. What I like most is the sound has become more analogue with greater fluidity. All the digital harshness have disappeared and this helps to reduce listening fatigue. Dynamic contrast seems to benefit from this upgrade too.
I am very thrilled with the result and certainly would recommend the PSU to all Mac Mini owners here. The improvement is so significant that I wager you will never go back to the stock power supply. Listening to the mini will never be the same. The only gripe that I can think of is the power supply upgrade will certainly void your mini warranty. Mine have expired so no issue here.
Hope this helps to give an insight the impact of PSU on the mini. Cheers.

That's really interesting to hear.
Can I ask what company you used for the upgrade and were the internal mod's carried out by you or the supplier?
Thanks

Sound Affairs in Singapore. I sent my unit to the dealer to do the mod and purchased its external power supply. I think from which company is not that important, the main point is to replace the extremely mechanical noisy stock SMPS with a linear power supply. Do it and you will in for a big surprise.
I will be as intrigued to try my modified PSU Mac Mini into a Hugo soon. That will be my final audition before purchasing a new Hugo to replace my nDAC/TXPS. Last 2 days I already listened using a headphone mini streamer playing into Hugo amplified by NAC202/HCDR/NAP200 powering a pair of Harbeth. This configuration left a very good impression on the sound quality that purchasing the Hugo is almost on the card.
A further update maybe required is there any difference/ease in being able to update memory/drives between the MM versions with superdrive and those without?
I believe the new MM released 2 weeks ago has the RAM soldered in and so is not serviceable.
I have the last of the Superdrive MMs. If I was buying today I would buy the model just before the new one (I believe it to be 'serviceable') and get a separate Superdrive. The no-drive MMs have low jitter outputs so no Hi-Face of similar device is needed.
My MM has a 60GB SSD and a G-Drive Mini HD where the music is stored.

Tend to agree, unless you are not in a hurry and want to check out whether the hard drive can be upgraded in the 2014 incarnation of the MM, or whether the jitter from optical-out or USB is better.
The availability of Thunderbolt 2 on the latest version is IMO of no benefit to SQ (as there's enough to throughout firm Thunderbolt 1 and most playback software playsback from RAM rather either an internal or external hard disk).
The only aspect that is potentially of value for music are the higher spec processors, as some believe that a more powerful processor met s less electrical noise (difficult to prove - my 2013 MM uses about 4% of capacity when playing 24/192 files)

Great to hear that it has made an impact for use with the Naim DAC (which is known on this forum for ts sensitivity to input sources).
I'm not intending to buy new.

You should seriously consider to add PS to your existing Mac Mini, the impact is tremendous for the better.
