New Nstream for mu-so (and hopefully all Naim streamers)

Posted by: Pev on 09 September 2014

5 hours since the announcement was posted and no thread??

It seems that an updated version exists which runs on Android as well as iOS with Spotify support and more services to come - hurrah!

But where is it? Not on Play Store as of 8pm BST... hopefully Naim will post a link soon. It's so frustrating to read a review by someone using it. I do want a mu-so for the kitchen though.

Someone's swallowed some grumpy pills.

I suppose it depends on whats been promised vs what you would like.

There are lots of things I would like lots of my things to do. Never the less just because I want them does not mean I shall get them, and I made the decision to buy the products without them things in them already.

On the airplay thing, perhaps fair enough, it was mentioned by naim way back when, but all the other grumpiness appears to come from things you want.

I am still not getting my head around why everyone is so moist over airplay, its shit. Because it stuck inside a naim box wont make it any less shit. Get an express and move on.

In many ways it would be better if Naim beavered away, got a product ready, and released it without warning. Letting information trickle out can only lead do disappointment. In these days of complex software, licensing requirements and all sorts, issuing a gannt chart of project deliverables, delivery dates and other project milestones is simply not possible, unless one is Apple and the like.

While nStream has its shortcomings, in particular the inability to browse the music collection while listening to the radio, and vice versa, I'm quite happy to muddle along until there is a better alternative. It's not worth becoming exercised.

If we were talking about a solution to Isis, Russian intentions towards Ukraine, Palestine, Scottish independence, bedroom tax, obesity etc etc, it would be worth becoming passionate. A new app to play music, no. It's too late for coffee - camomile tea maybe.

I'd like to try out the new app, any word when it will be released to Google Play and the App store?

Posted on: 09 September 2014 by charlesphoto

Okay, that is just insanity that nStream is no longer in the App store. What's a new Naim customer supposed to do in the meantime? Or if one needs to reload the app? Great products Naim - not so good with their relationship to reality (like lot of luxury brands).

nStream is showing up just fine in the App store viewed from this side of the pond.

Not over here.

I seem to remember that there was a lot of 'noise' on the forum regarding the inability of Naim to provide native access to Spotify and AirPlay.

In fact if I remember rightly it was all quite heated.

Seems that they have now done what people have asked for, at least with mu-so, and of course we wait for news regarding updates for our streamers.

Qobuz CD quality streaming didn't come to the party until Spring this year and the big push wasn't really for Qobuz native access until then.

So I'm not sure there can be grumbles on this front?

The new App looks good from the screen shots in the Andrew Everard article which I will look forward to checking out when it becomes available, but for now, nStream, whilst it isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, does the job for me.

I think it is very difficult for Naim to win: they don't release any info and there are grumbles because people don't know anything; they let people know some information prior to official release, and there are still grumbles because either it doesn't give full details or it is perceived not to provide what people want (even though no-one off here has used it yet).

Only thing they could do is to be quicker to release 'stuff' but then there is always the risk that it will be released with bugs or problems.

Ive observed a nearly identical pattern on here at every change/ release over recent years since I've been on the Forum.

I guess that's forum life for you!

Would there be Android option for Nserve?

Posted on: 10 September 2014 by ChrisH

Yes AKD.

If you have a look at the 'sticky' about mu-so at the top, and click on the link posted by PaulS, you can read a bit about it.

Oops, sorry, getting my Serves and Streams mixed up!

Havent seen anything mentioned about Android for nServe...

I don't think it is even proper spotify- just spotify connect. just means you can stream from your ipad or phone over wifi to the hifi. Spotify being installed not on the muso or streamer, but on the phone or tablet.

Posted on: 10 September 2014 by dayjay

I think with Spotify connect you control it via your hand held device but it streams from Spotify servers direct to your player, proper spotify rather than streaming upnp from your ipad or whatever to your player which you could do now if you wanted to

I'm old school. No interest in 'playlists' or 'Spotify' - just albums all the way through for me sounding the best I can afford.

Improved graphics might be nice but otherwise n-stream is perfectly adequate - browse albums, play album.

Be nice if I could also listen to radio, browse albums, then play album too. To be honest despite all the stick it gets I don't mind n-stream, its pretty reliable and does a good chunk of what I need it to fo. If they improve it then great but I wont lose any sleep waiting

All I want is to be able to see both the name of the song and the name of the artist on the track listing of compilation albums (or all albums by default). Not too much to ask I think....

Posted on: 11 September 2014 by Nick B

Another vote here for improved handling of track artists on compilations, although I think this might require a server update rather than a streamer update. New interface looks good.

I do wish there were a few more details of what's coming and when, but that's just not the way Naim operate. I find the best way to distract myself from this is to get back to the music !

Same here, although I do use playlists. I use both n-stream (with my ND5/Hugo) and Kinsky (with my Klimax Renew DS), and actually like both. I probably have a marginal preference for the Kinsky graphics and it probably handles playlists a little more easily. However, I have no real complaints with regard to n-stream.

Mind you, having said that I have no real complaints with n-stream, an android or Windows desktop version of the app would be welcomed.

Posted on: 11 September 2014 by charlesphoto
No, the handling of the track names is a control point software issue. Every other one I've tried (Kinsky, PS, etc) does this (even if they won't control the Naim). You do have to have the artist named with the tracks on solo albums as well, but I'll suffer with that.

In the meantime, the Retune app for Android lets you control iTunes on your Mac or PC.  That might let you ditch the iPad a bit sooner.

Waiting with you.
