And what is wrong with THESE people?

Bottom line is that many are poor and have little choice. I don't blame those who are clearing the rainforest. We cleared virtually all our forests long ago, and now sit smugly in a sea of self-congratulatory and warm-feeling criticism.

But nevertheless, our planet's ever increasing population is consuming non-renewable resources at an exponentially increasing rate. We're doomed, I tell you.....doomed!

How much do we depend on forests for our supply of oxygen ? In what other ways does mankind benefit from retention of these forests ?

Is it necessary that we "benefit" from forests to make them worth saving?

It is the only source we have, how much more dependable do you want to be?

For perspective, oceans cover 71% of the world's surface, forests less than 9%. Oceans are the primary recycler of the earth's nutrients, and phytoplankton in the world's seas contribute up to 85% of our oxygen.

More on the subject...

So, we don't depend on rain forests for oxygen, and we appreciate the hypocrisy in which we find ourselves - having inherited our own lands from previous generations who cleared our own forests……….

…….mind you, sitting here in the middle of BC, there still seems to be an awful lot of timber growing…...

All that Brazil has to do is identify that plant and invite one of the drug companies in to exploit its live-giving benefits. Until then, as wink says, the forests are doomed.

Most interesting, do you have a link to the announcement of Grand Unification? I seem to have missed it.
