The Kinks and Blur

Posted by: David O'Higgins on 18 September 2014

Just treated myself to two albums I missed while growing up. The Kinks 'Muswell Hillbillies' and Blur 'Parklife'. Both bought as 96/24 from HDTracks. Have just started to listen to the latter. No matter about the provenance, it sounds very good to me, with the almost 2 week old NDS still improving every day.

Thanks Wat.

I already had 'Village Green', but the the soundtrack to my adolescence included such sublime tunes as 'Waterloo Sunset' and 'Days', and somehow they didn't keep that instant appeal into the 70s. However, I'm just listening to the title track of 'Hillbillies'', and it's up with the best of them!

Hi David -

I agree with Wat that the Kinks albums from the 1960s were wonderful! They've long been one of my favorite bands, so I can easily find something to love in just about all of their albums. I also enjoy Ray Davies solo efforts.

Muswell Hillbillies is great. I remember trying to make the case to my college roomates that it was equal to (if not better than) Exile on Main Street.   The other Kinks album from the mid-to-late 1970s that stood out for me was Misfits -- strong emotional songwriting, and a fine rocker!

Also, glad to hear your NDS is settling in nicely. Hope it continues to bring you great music for many years to come!

ATB.

PS - Have been tempted by the 5-CD box set of the Kinks BBC sessions for quite some time, and just now ordered it!
