A question on the AV2's analogue outputs, thanks

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 20 September 2014

Hello,

does anybody know if the 2 x RCA #1 tape output of the AV2 actually outputs any converted signal in analogue bypassing the volume control (and the preamp section), so that the AV2 can, at need, be used as a pure DAC for any digital source used (PCM, DD etc), into a preamp (but not in the more conventional Unity Gain mode)?

Thanks

Massimo

Not sure but will have a good read of the manual tomorrow & see if this the case. Also worth firing an email off the Naim techs too.

Cheers, Rack.

I think it can Max, but I've no longer got an AV2 and it appears the new Naim website doesn't allow you to view older manuals. Shame!

I've got PDF copies of the old AV2 manual. If Max can put his email add in his profile I'll send it on to him.

Hi,

thanks rackkit, I've just managed finding an old PDF myself... I'll read it carefully,

I haven't tried it, but have considered it and come to the conclusion it is not possible. The signal does not cross domains, according to the manual. Do let us know if the outcome is different.

"The AV2 is also fitted with both analogue and digital audio outputs. These outputs duplicate the selected input signal in either the analogue or digital domain. No signal will be present on the analogue output if a digital input is selected and similarly no signal will be present on the digital output if an analogue input is selected. The analogue outputs can be used to restore the amplifier tape monitor outputs if these have been used as a signal source for the AV2."

That doen't make sense to me. If you input a digital signal you can pick this up on the analogue outputs, for instance SPDIF in, analogue output to the power amps. still, maybe it explains a bit more in the manual.

I speculate it means that you cannot by-pass the pre-amp and have a "pure" DAC.
