Leonard Cohen - Popular Problems
Posted by: David O'Higgins on 21 September 2014
Just downloaded this in Studio Master from QoBuz. Now copying to NAS. My first new release download! (First of many, I hope).
Bought the CD on Friday from a store in France - I thought it wasn't supposed to be released until tomorrow... Very good of course, Cohen fans will love it (I am one of them); I do however find the bass line on some of the tracks rather unsubtle - is it me or do other members agree?
Irish Times editorial and a qubuz studio master, this Cohen chap could be a contender.

John, only three tracks in, and I'm shedding tears! I'm biased, but it's brilliant!
I may have to buy it on one of those shiny disc things then!
SJB
But can't you download it and put it on a shiny USB key into your NDAC, thence to the Preamp?
I haven't passed that Rubicon yet!

Frenchnaim, I apologise that john and I have turned this into a personal exchange, but I'm not sure I really understand your question. I have heard the album once through now, and I think it's incredibly good, and I don't perceive any deficiencies. I just want tomorrow off!!
I have listened to it several times now, it was on the France-Inter site the whole of last week - I certainly like the music very much, but the production team is very different from that of Old Ideas ; Patrick Leonard did a mot more work on this one, there isn't the influence of Sharon Robinson, and others. What will the next one sound like...?
Good review in the Guardian too.
Forget about the next one, savour this one, and 'You got me singin', what a way to leave us wanting more......
We've been listening to this all week via NPR First Listen. My wife is a huge fan; rather seduced by the old goat I think!
I like it more than Old Ideas but Ten New Songs still seems the high bar. Agree re the production but then the supporting music has never really been his strength. At least he uses the backing singers a but more subtly on this one.
Waiting for the silver disc to land, but more excited by Tweedy and, hopefully, the new Alt-J

I bought the album too. To my opinion it is a superb album with very nice songs, sometimes a bit mystique, but typical Leonard Cohen. Like the woman backing vocals too !
I agree with you Iver, though I notice the reaction on Amazon is mixed. You can't please everyone!
Cohen&Dylan, masters at their craft, not for all ears. I do really like him but don't have anything from him. I would go to his concert but at NOKIA in LA years ago the price was too high. I rented a DVD of his live performance, that was fine by me, maybe I should buy that.
I will pick up the new album so thanks for the heads up.
