Naim app for Android

Posted by: Pev on 26 September 2014

It's 9.20 am UK time on Friday 26th September and no sign of it yet in Play Store... I guess they've technically got until midnight... sigh...

I thought a separate thread would be worthwhile as many of us Android people will be coming to it with fresh eyes and maybe have a different take on it from the Nstream people on the other app thread. Though all views are welcome of course.

Indeed 10.15 here and not up yet.

Then again, I never expected Naim to listen to us (forum) and adapt to our demand as their product are in a different league.

For what it's worth, cheers Naim.

Still 10.26  ;-)

Something must be happening. Their "Connection" page now does not have the "New APP"  annoucement anymore.

1 - Are they updating it as we speak

2 - Change of plans

???

No sorry. I just searched Naim in Play Store and it came up second

Posted on: 26 September 2014 by Cowboy Tony

Not seeing it here in Ireland either

Initial thoughts... Nice. Quick. Clean UI. No issues connecting to SU & UQ1 (latest firmware)

Posted on: 26 September 2014 by Roeland

No, searching for Naim I get a whopping 198 results not one of them being the app

Got it! I was the 11th download so now the fun begins!

remember to note the unit firmware advice before downloading, we are working hard to incorporate as much of the feedback we received from the ios release, there will be some items missing on party mode on the android app but its coming within the next few days as an update.

Already working fine on my SU - really like the look and feel and seems to do all the basics very well.

I hope some of the old hands who've used Nstream will pop in this thread to help us newbies - for instance, what's this Rovi information thing I've heard about? Can't seem to find it when playing a track, though bit rate and volume control are present and correct.

Overall, nice one so far!

Posted on: 26 September 2014 by Camlan

It doesn't appear to have ROVI on it.

I have to say on a very brief overview the iOS app seems better.

Posted on: 26 September 2014 by TonyR

Looks like Rovi information is not available

Installed on 2 devices, Nexus 5 phone and Nexus 7 tablet. Setup was a breeze.

A few observations.

  • The bit rate is showing when you are in the play queue which is welcome
  • Really fast on my 2 devices, much quicker than on an iPad 4. When you go in it takes a couple of seconds to settle
  • Standatd use of the back button makes it nicer to use
  • On the phone only portrait mode is available, the tablet gives both portrait and landscape
  • If you want to switch devices you need to make sure you close it on the other one, Android multitasks better so keeps hold of the application.
  • The A-Z works in the same way as the ios version but the alphabet is not showing when enabled
  • No Rovi
  • The volume control is unusable on both my devices. I am using system automation (NDX to a 282) and the - mute and + are really close together, when you can get a finger on the icons it doesn'tnseem to do much. The minus doesn't work at all and plus just works in increments so you have to keep pressing it. Mute works fine. Volume is 'hidden' as per ios.
  • There are some odd options, like Room Position (choices of more than 25 cm or less than 25 cm) and what is 'cleaning mode'

It sounds like there is more comming very soon so I say this is looking pretty good.

Could we have a widget, pretty please?!

Hmmm, downloaded it no problem, but have big concerns about the volume control, it is seriously laggy and jumps up to max vol as soon as you touch the display, irrespective of where you touch it. Fortunately the Uniti was limited to 60 max vol but was intrigued to find the app managed to actually run it up to 65 before it finally responded and turned itself down. I can see a few blown speakers on unlimited systems if this isn't dealt with!!

You have been warned...

Agree, there should be a + and - on each end to easy the movement of the slider.

I have Nexus 5 which has a pretty screen but the slider is too small.

However I found that if you touch on the left of where slider ends, you can move it easier. Still very dangerous so I blocked my max at 60 too.

Volume control works beautifully on my Superuniti - maybe there is an issue with some devices or configurations - possibly when using a separate preamp?

Certainly some kind of user guide would be helpful - I'm also waiting for an answer on what "room position" and "cleaning mode" are. Exploring and finding out is kinda fun in a way but I don't want to do something I can't undo!

Still liking it though - in spite of no Rovi.
