Naim app for Android
Posted by: Pev on 26 September 2014
It's 9.20 am UK time on Friday 26th September and no sign of it yet in Play Store... I guess they've technically got until midnight... sigh...
I thought a separate thread would be worthwhile as many of us Android people will be coming to it with fresh eyes and maybe have a different take on it from the Nstream people on the other app thread. Though all views are welcome of course.
I think room position is for the Mu-so as I recall reading that it had different eq settings depending on how close it was to the wall. Clearly this option shouldn't be available for an NDX!
As for cleaning mode, I'll ask the wife later!

There's quite a lot of dissatisfaction with the new app over on the iOS thread, so let me say a big thank you to Naim here for the best feature of the new version: its availability on Android at last!
My experience so far has been positive. My reference points have been the various uPnP control points available for Android that I've been using for the last year or so, mainly UPnPlay, BubbleUPnP and more recently the Audionet app, and the I think the Naim app measures up pretty well.
I'm using it with an NDS and a Qute. A few comments:
- I share the concerns about the volume control on the Qute -- it's not possible to be very precise with the slider, especially on a phone, and it's too easy to set the volume too high.
- On the NDS, while it's good to finally be able to adjust volume using system automation (the other UPnP apps can't do this). all you get on the NDS is + / - buttons that perform the slightest of nudges up or down. This is the opposite of the problem with the Qute -- it takes far too many presses to significantly change the level. How about a press-and-hold function that increases or decreases volume while the button is held?
- Even though I have checked the show volume control option in the settings, there is no volume slider visible for the NDS, just the + / - buttons.
- I've had a few crashes while changing visual styles.
- A suggestion: make the styles specific to each player. That way you have a visual cue as to which streamer you are connected to.
Looking forward to the updates and hoping that the Android version will stay in step with iOS!
Thanks,
Adrian
Seeing the volume issue here to on a samsung phone, if you so much as look at it, it jumps to max.
i little bug i thinks.
other than that its great, just the right size an a samsung galaxy 2 as well. Might get an iphone 6
Just downloaded the App onto an Asus Nexus 7.
having trouble adding tracks to the play queue. I hit the ... and it just switches to playing that track instead of presenting the queuing options. Bug filed with Naim support.
Seems to work fine.
I have the volume control issue. There seems to be something wrong with its reading of where the touch is. Also, despite setting 'maximum volume' to 45 in the settings the volume control will still move the volume in excess of that level.
Very promising.
Works fine on my galaxy note 10.1, lacks some functionality of the ios version; no Rovi, can't see playlists on the front screen as per ios and I've not tested if playlists are there and working yet. File format and bitrate shows (doesn't on ios). Otherwise its pretty much the same as it is on my ipad 2. Having on Android is a step forward I guess
Nice one Naim. It was a long wait but worth it. Works well on a cheapo Cyclone Voyager to the Uniti.
Question for others. Do the album covers look low definition (pixelated) or is it my settings ?
Looks great here.
i suggest you look at 'bliss' media manager.
you can set rules such as minimum image size and it can the imbed it or side car it as a folder.jpg.
room position and cleaning mode are for the mu-so.
Works fine for a first release on a new platform.
As stated by someone else, crashes when changing styles.
Volume control works (automated from ndx to 202)
Things I think would be nice in the future :
You mention deep info for the ios app only. Could this be included for the android version or at the very least, musicxmatch lyric support?
Could we have independent settings for when to show things in list view and when to show as a grid?
For example, I like viewing all my artists in a list view but once I go to that artists albums it would be nice for the app to display that in grid view.
Volume slider for non muso devices.
Only have - mute + for ndx.
The ability to toggle metadata info being displayed and the inclusion of 16bit/24bit in between format and sample rate
Would be great if when using the app you could have a small widget appear in the notification area with a small artwork tile, next track, pause etc for quick access when doing other things on the control device.
While we are on the subject of widgets, how about.... A widget?
Seek to time not working at the moment.
Ndx firmware 3.22
Maybe a green writing option for all the classic users out there?
Maximise album artwork when using in landscape mode.
That's all I can think of for now but great job so far.
Also hardware button volume adjustments would be great, and control from the lock screen.
Couldn't get album images to show up on either of my Android devices (Moto X, Nook HD). Both Bubble and Upnplay work on those. I've just tried the Bubble free, but looks pretty nice, though navigation can be a bit confusing. Not sure if I want to go for the paid version with full functionality, or wait for Naim to get it together, stick with the original on my iPad 1, get another iPad, etc.
Is Nserve app for Android in the pipeline? Or the servers are not as important as streamers. Considering Server products came before Streamer products
Ndx firmware 3.22
Downloaded the app to the Nexus 7 I use to control my UnitiQute (firmware 3.17) and Synology NAS (latest software) with BubbleUPnP. The app finds the UnitiQute and also shows a generic server icon, but I can't browse any tracks. However, it sees a track being played via BubbleUPnP. I couldn't find any settings to let the app look for music on the NAS. Am I missing something?
I couldn't find any settings to let the app look for music on the NAS. Am I missing something?
Even more peculiar. I can select music from my NAS with the remote and UnitiQute display, and the album cover and track info for the current track show on the app. But I cannot do the same from the app. What gives?
Many thanks for the android !
Installed on my daughter's nexus 7 v2 and Sony Xperia -> works flawlessly.
Downloaded and installed the .apk on my Jolla TOH (SailfishOS): Contrary to other android apps, the Naim app works fine, except for a problem with the virtual keyboard. But that is down to the VM, for which Naim is not responsible.

BTW: My better half was asking for a WP8 version.
BTW2: None of us is missing rovi.
I've been using the app on and off over the weekend on a Galaxy S2 (Android 4.1.2). In addition to the crashes I noticed early on when changing styles, the app seems to have problems reconnecting to devices after it has been put into the background for a while and then reactivated. On many occasions the app crashes when reactivated and has to be restarted.
Congratulations on the first Android release. Just a few observations/suggestions.
1. I have installed on both a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone (Android 4.4.2) and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (Android 4.1.2). It seems more stable on the S5 which is a shame as the Tab is my usual remote for my Qute2 (Firmware 3.22). But it works on both.
2. The best method for exiting the application is not clear. I currently have to use a lot of back key presses. Maybe an exit option from the menu would be useful.
3. It is not clear how to get back up to select a different DLNA server. If the server is reset (Minim for instance when the media is added and refreshed) or sometimes just when starting the application you get just a blank screen when trying to browse the contents of your library and the only way I have found to get the information back is to either switch to another input then back to DLNA or reset the application from the menu. Neither of these always works and sometimes I need to do both (several times on occasion).
4. Don't know much about Rovi as I never used the Apple software (used Bubble on Android) but would have been nice to see what it was like
5. The selection of individual tracks for playlists could also be easier. Every time I click on a single track it adds the entire album.
All in all though a great first release and I'm confident that these problems will be corrected quite quickly.
Thanks, there's just a twist to that: if the app is set for UPnP at start, it doesn't look for the servers. Following another message on this thread (from Sorren, thanks!), I switched sources in the app and then back to UPnP, and I got the servers to show.
I do seem to be seeing a lot of duplicated tracks when browsing my NAS via UPnP, but it's not happening for all albums, which is a bit odd. And I've noticed that switching to another app and then back to Naim can mean the Naim app struggles to pick up where it left off. For example, I frequently can't go back to browsing UPnP tracks after coming back to the app - getting to the now playing screen and then pressing back just leaves the app hanging as it apparently tries and fails to get the info from my NAS. Going back to the home screen of the app and re-selecting UPnP doesn't help, but using the remote and Qute screen still works fine.
I'll try the 'stay connected' option and see if that fixes the latter. Not sure what exactly it does though. And will hold fire on reporting anything to support until the next update, as I'm sure they're swimming in issues and/or quibbles by now.
My two suggestions at the moment would be to have track information and perhaps rudimentary controls appear in the drop down notification area, and to have a way of properly exiting the app. The former would probably be better off prioritising information over controls. The latter would get around having to reboot my phone whenever the above 'returning to the app' issue crops up.
All in all though, seems a good start!
'Stay connected' does seem to be helping with app resumption issues.
But I did just notice something odd. When initially looking through the app settings, I found loudness already ticked, so I un-ticked it. But looking through the speaker options on the UQ itself just now, I saw that loudness was set to 'yes'. Setting it to 'no' has removed a boominess in the bass which I was thinking could be due to speaker placement or something like that (still getting used to the UQ). After all, it couldn't have been because of the loudness function being on, because I'd turned it off via the app, or so I thought.
So if any of the development team check this thread, might be worth double checking that app and streamer are reporting loudness settings to one another properly.
