Naim app for Android

Posted by: Pev on 26 September 2014

It's 9.20 am UK time on Friday 26th September and no sign of it yet in Play Store... I guess they've technically got until midnight... sigh...

I thought a separate thread would be worthwhile as many of us Android people will be coming to it with fresh eyes and maybe have a different take on it from the Nstream people on the other app thread. Though all views are welcome of course.

Noone missing a stop button exept me?

Posted on: 03 October 2014 by Roeland

I just press the Pause button?

When would there come an update for the android app?

Posted on: 03 October 2014 by Volker

Ok I will try the pause button. I did not use it because I expected it to keep alive the connection to the NAS so that the hard drives would not go to suspend mode...

Best wishes, Volker

Is there already any news on an update for the Android app?

Anybody experiencing a 'loss' in UPnP server when using Synology Mediaserver? I noticed that sometimes the android app doesn't find the UPnP server unless I stop the server and restart the server. I am not using the latest beta version in DSM 5.  But this moring it also could not find my windows mediaserver, so I am wondering... Android app, router, Synology mediaserver, android version (4.1.2)?

Thx! Rik

Either a network discovery issue or, most likely, your Synology NAS is going to sleep. Check the NAS settings on DSM. There are apps available that will send a WOL (wake over LAN) signal to the Synology if you would prefer to retain the "greener" sleep setting.

I've been experiencing the same problem in the last week or so. Android 4.4.4, both BubbleUPnP and Naim app, latest non-beta DSM. I can revive it by stopping Mediaserver and restarting it. While this is happening, I can access music files on the NAS from my Mac, so it's not a sleep issue. What's puzzling is that DSM has not been updated in several weeks, but the problem appeared only recently. OTOH, DSM apps are set to auto-update, so maybe Mediaserver changed more recently, I'm not sure how to check that.

My guess its hibernated into a deep comatose sleep & does not want to wake up normally. You might try changing the SSDP advertisement intervals.

Open Media Server - General Settings - manually change the SSDP number

The default is 960 (seconds)  changing to something lower seems to help wake it properly (I'm not sure about the logic)   I had mine at 360 180 & 60,  all seemed to fix it.  I left it on 60.

But first change to the latest DSM 5,  there is no reason why not.

I was wondering this too, the Apple version update has been around for a while now.

At least a fix for the volume control.

As I understand it, the app and streamers get their information from the media server, i.e. a programme running on the NAS, rather than by indexing the actual files themselves. Your Mac will likely be going straight to the files themselves, and so ignoring the media server.  So it'd be useful to know if you can still browse directly on your streamer while it's happening.

I say that because I've experienced issues with the app hanging on a blank screen when trying to show the artist/album index, while I can still browse and play files via the streamer itself. As both processes should AFAIK be using the media server running on the NAS, I figure that means the app is playing up, rather than the server or NAS.

I could not get my streamer (UnitiQute firmware 3.22) to navigate to other music on the NAS, either, but I rarely use the remote for that purpose so I may have been clicking the wrong buttons. I'll try again more carefully if/when it happens next.

Losing UPnP server seems to be the mediaserver on the Synology NAS. I am already on DSM 5, update 5. The app can't find the UPnP server, but also the NDX itself can't detect the UPnP server unless, again, I stop and start the service. Could it be also a router issue? I am using Time Capsule latest generation. The next time I have this issue I will just restart the Time Capsule and report back to you guys

Can't seem to operate volume on my NDX with the Android version of the new control app. Works fine on the new iOS version

Hopefully should be fixed in the imminent update due soon.........

I hope this is a good way to get to the relevant Naim Android app designers:

1. It would be great to have a Refresh option to refresh the app's view of the files on a UPnP server when the files/file structure there are edited. In the app's current version, some of that structure is cached in the app, and the only way to refresh it is to stop the app from the Android Settings>Apps and clear the cache.

2. When an album or playlist is playing, the device goes to sleep, I wake it up, go back to the app, and touch the bottom bar showing the currently playing track, there's a brief hiccup in the rendering.

3. On a Lollipop pre-release device, the app always crashes on startup.

I'm enjoying the app overall, in particular for its better handling of gapless play in comparison to BubbleUPnP. Keep up the good work!

Well....losing of the UPnP server is still occurring. Restarting the Time Capsule did not work. The NAIM android app is unable to see the UPnP server, however the DS audio android app does see it and so does the NDX itself. So it seems to be the android app and not the mediaserver of Synology. Maybe install minimserver? Anybody has a better experience with minimserver instead of the synology mediaserver?

Thx,Rik

I followed a suggestion in an earlier thread and set the SSDP advertisement interval to 90 on the Mediaserver control panel (see https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...interval-on-synology). The problem went away.
