The Mu-so has landed

Posted by: Steve J on 06 October 2014

John Lewis had one in the local store. They give a 2 year warranty so I couldn't resist. Very easy to set up with the Mu-so app, about two minutes. Initial impressions of SQ are good even from switch on.

A classic black naim version? yes -- but some of that depends on the design language for Naim moving forward. to be clear, I love the classic chrome look. I love the olive era, and I like the modern black/green naim look. But the muso look of brushed aluminium and the transparancy is something that ties into Statement.

Also consideration has to be made about where the device is used - an olive or black/green would work well in my rack, but I'm not going to put a Muso in the middle of my Fraim rack!

So consideration has to be given to kitchen, den, and other such places, and do so in a design language that will be relevant in 2020.

For example, it might be a better fit with something like a gunmetal grey colour rather than black/green. Just a thought.

vor 1 Sekunde

Muso is on air since last Friday.

Pure Naim Sound!!

Tonality, speed and rythtm as the big ones.

This little thing astonished me so much and I sit in front of the muso with open mouth....

What a big sound panorama out of this small Muso.

Maybe my expectations were too low and therefore the big surprise.

Definitely in terms of music things the muso gave me the same  satisfaction as my main Naim system.

Great!!

By the way, I like the design speech much.

No classic look is needed.

Maybe a switch to green light....

I totally agree with that logic Jon. I have just replaced my MuSo in the breakfast room after decorating and it fits in very well, where I doubt a Classic looking box would. Depending on the light the outer casing looks dark, as seen in some of the promotional pictures. I like the look.

Hi Steve,

I would love to see a pic of your MuSo in your beautiful newly decorated breakfast room. I bet it looks stunning.

Regards Graham.

Although we've decorated Graham, my wife hasn't finished with deciding on new carpets and curtains etc, etc etc.....

In your own time Steve ...

Take care Graham.

I have a Mu-So which will be a present, but I am trying it out to avoid hassle later. It sounds great and works very well. I have a query though. I can play iTunes files from my MacBook using Bluetooth, but the only way I can get a wifi connection is to turn off the firewall on the MacBook - then it's fine. I cannot see any way on the Mac of adjusting the firewall so it is essentially on but allows the Mu-So connection. I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

Clive

I picked up one today from John Lewis. Got it from JL so I could easily return it if it didn't work in my room. They said it was the first one they had ever sold! (Milton Keynes). There were two Sonos reps and a B&W rep in store in a heaving store giving demos and answering questions. Their Muso was turned off and all dirty from finger prints.

Anyway, got it home and fired it up. Sounded nice but uneven with a bloated base. Put some Black Raviolli which made a huge improvement. I think the light console table didn't do it any favours. Really enjoying it now!

They're isolating pads designed to go under hi-fi kit.

The other day I moved my Mu-so onto an empty floor cabinet & it sounded very boomy but as I progressively filled the cabinet with books and other stuff the sound was gradually transformed. Now it's back to sounding fab.

I listened to it in a proper hifi store, placed on an empty  cupboard and halfway into the room far from the wall.  It sounded dull, bloating and bass heavy. A change of the room setting brought a better lighter sound. Still no hifi though. I was dissapointed. Placing and solidity of bearer could be key? Anyway the size was ok. I hope to hear a follow up on this point to enhance future purchase?

It was probably a brand new unit. The MuSo takes a little time to 'relax' the drivers. I've been using mine on a granite kitchen worktop, whilst decorating, and now back on a large wooden bay windowsill. It sounds very good in both situations. I agree there is poor stereo separation when close up but it fills the room with good quality sound. I'm very happy to listen to music on it when I'm not in my listening room.

Thank you Steve, I'll go back in a while and hear what has become of it.

Hi All

I'm considering a Muso for a kitchen audio solution. It would sit on a polished granite worktop, the area is approx 700mm x 1000mm x 600mm  (hwd), plenty of space for the Muso but it needs to share the space with a TV.

As the Muso is only 256mm deep, it should easily sit in front of the TV which I was thinking of wall mounting however, given the Muso's heat sinks are on the back is there any recommendation as to how much vertical clearance there should be?

So either there will not be an issue or nobody knows.

Either way, I doubt it will be an issue.

On a slightly different note, it's bit of a shame that the different coloured front's cost another £90

£69.99.

I've used the MuSo on a granite worktop and it sounds great. There isn't much heat production so put the TV at whatever height suits.

Thanks for the replies.

Okay, so not £90 but £70 is still a bit OTT... oh the price of style!

I've done a bit of 3D modelling with SketchUp and since the Muso isn't very deep it can sit in front of the TV but there should still be just enough clearance for me to swivel out the TV..

I can never understand why TVs and music systems are needed in kitchens all they are going to do is get greasy and steamed.

As we have a small house the central hifi covers all the down stairs rooms.

Now the bedroom has room for a Mu-So though.

I got one from Naim AD yesterday. It will be a present to my teen cousin. She has full set of Macs and idevices but listens to music via those crappy Bluetooth speakers and terrible in ear phones.

My dealer, as always, opened the box for me to check the unit and had it run for a while to show its features. Thingy as it may be but it is still nice to get it from your dealer instead of Apple store or a big department store.

Since it became an open box item (!) already, I decided to fire it up back home last night.

A couple of quick observations

Pros: Sleek design, solid no nonsense quality, connection wizardry ensuring do-it-all convenience, room filling energetic sound, sweet treble, prominent bass, easy to set up, OK’ish integration with the app.

Cons: SN2 heavy, no real midrange, too much hiss at stand-still no matter what (I wouldn't care less if it did not get in the way of music when you listen to a very low volume classical), and maybe most importantly flaky Spotify connection (AirPlay trounces it in stability but at the expense of SQ)

I hope it’d make her happy and would be a nice introduction to Naim. I could have thought getting one for myself too only if they had come in all black with Naim lighting in green.

Mu-So is ordered should be at Chez bigh on Friday. Mrs just asked will it need playing before xmas? Oh yes says I.

Posted on: 04 December 2014 by BigH47

Mu-So arrived today instead of Friday, all up and running. Despite tweaking my back bringing it in!

Sounds very good a little bass boom but it fills the room so well, great product. Although it's a christmas present I did say needs "running in" so that it's OK by Christmas day.

Now trying to get my head round the iPhone/iPad app.

I have my iTunes music on the hard drive along with other music , it's the UPnP thing I don't understand, the app finds music but I can't tell where it is on my server, perhaps I have to "fiddle about" some more.

Hi BigH,

You will need a UPnP server somewhere on your network to make your music available - personally I'd recommend Asset UPnP (from www.dbpoweramp.com ) if you don't have one on your computer however I'm sure that other people have other recommendations.

Cheers

Phil
