The Mu-so has landed

Posted by: Steve J on 06 October 2014

John Lewis had one in the local store. They give a 2 year warranty so I couldn't resist. Very easy to set up with the Mu-so app, about two minutes. Initial impressions of SQ are good even from switch on.

The other day I moved my Mu-so onto an empty floor cabinet & it sounded very boomy but as I progressively filled the cabinet with books and other stuff the sound was gradually transformed. Now it's back to sounding fab.

But that is what you would expect, your Muso was exciting the natural resonances of the box it was sat on - ie your cabinet.

Tony what is your impression of the Muso, I am also thinking about purchasing one?

Sounds very good a little bass boom but it fills the room so well, great product. Although it's a christmas present I did say needs "running in" so that it's OK by Christmas day.

Now trying to get my head round the iPhone/iPad app.

I have my iTunes music on the hard drive along with other music , it's the UPnP thing I don't understand, the app finds music but I can't tell where it is on my server, perhaps I have to "fiddle about" some more.

What sort of server do you have BigH?

Hey BigH and BigBill - are we related.  I am one of the Royal Tunbridge Wells' Bigs!

Posted on: 04 December 2014 by BigH47

Bill, I'm a Crawley Big!

My server is an HP Proliant 2 x 2 TB raid. Running MS W Server 2011.

I seem to have loaded Asset UPnP on the dashboard.

iPhone app sees some music but I haven't been able find these albums on the server YET!

Ah yes, I remember now, I was just wondering what OS you were using and I assumed (wrongly) it was Gary Linux.

Yes, I, err, kind of knew that BB....

Anyway, I think the Muso's just great. I gave it a big dose of loud today & it really blew me away - a truly surprising sound for such a relatively compact device.

I'll be buying a Mu-So over the next few weeks. Really want a coloured grid, but feel really bad about throwing away a perfectly good black grill. Must be some great technology in the grills to cost approx 8% of the complete unit.
Posted on: 07 December 2014 by BigH47

It definitely changes the presentation with the grill off. Whether that is 8% worth I couldn't possibly say.

Can't wait for the " ...the Blue front is better than the standard black" etc etc.

Luckily I prefer the look of the black grille to the coloured ones. Personally I can't imagine a decor where the Orange grille would fit. Unless you are Tango man.

I think the Mu-So looks best with a black grill

Steve, you've really put me off the Orange one.
Posted on: 07 December 2014 by tonym

Don't worry folks, given how popular the Mu-so appears to be it won't be long before you'll see different-coloured foams being offered on eBay for 2/6p. I fancy a green one.

Sorry zanc.

I'm glad to say I'm the proud owner of a Muso having received it today.

I'd read a few reviews but not actually listened to one before committing to buy.

It really is a very impressive piece of kit, yes its no replacement for a 'proper' hi fi set up but for the size and cost of the thing its superb! I had it set up in 10 minutes (wired ethernet) and been messing around with the various inputs. I'm currently enjoying some FLAC files being played from my server and they sound very good indeed!!

Overall very very pleased and hopefully it'll improve a little more with a few more hours on it!

Likewise,

I was in JL yesterday having a mooch and spotted it.

Not exactly vibrant with the display, however, managed to hook up my phone and play a few tunes.

With that, the salesman turned up, and surprisingly, he knew a lot about it and was able to demonstrate it perfectly.

He said they have sold a lot, and have even had Naim persons in there with their families doing a bit of secret shopping!

Anyway, got mine home and set up and whilst it sounded average in the shop, once set up and located in its position it really shines.

But, and there always is one,  i find the drivers run out of puff on near the upper scale of the volume playing some 'enthusiastic' electronica via Airplay.

I have set up the TV via optical and syncing is near enough perfect so no worries there, except, the volume (on the Muso) is not all that loud with this input method when watching music channels, although to most it is probably loud enough for most!

Iphone App is very, very slick and works extremely well. One thing that is a bit annoying is that the "now playing" screen when using iRadio keeps disappearing and when you unlock the phone you have to keep reopening it to adjust the volume. Maybe that could be looked at on the next software update?

For the money it is a very well designed and engineered wifi music box, especially when looking at the only slightly cheaper competition.

Well done Naim.

You can use the remote or dial on the top of the MuSo to adjust the volume. Quicker than using the phone.

Posted on: 10 December 2014 by max35

I demoed muso in last days, also had an issue with volume when used with TV. Optical in is way too low compared to other sources. Info from maim support is; this is a problem of TV low output or wrong downmix from 5.1 to PCM audio.

If volume of inputs would be controllable separately then this would not be a problem, because I could dial optical in to 100% and have a good range of volume.

Otherwise. Fine piece of equipment, but not mind-blowing.

In some instances yes, but its handy to only have to use one 'remote'.

Thanks for this, as i thought it may have been my TV that my have been the issue.

Going back to the App, whilst playing the radio last night, the 'now playing' bit at the bottom of the app is now disappearing altogether sometimes when the phone locks and i unlock it, which means i have to close and reopen the app for it to come back, only for it to then disappear again if the phone locks!

Grrrr.

MuSo set up and working well. Cerys Matthews on Radio 6 this morning. A few drop outs, but that happens with all digital radio. Ripped CDs sound well from ITunes.  I've tried my first flac files on a USB stick too, aside from this everything is wireless.  This is my first tryout of streaming and so far I'm delighted.  Have the App on phone and I Pad, haven't tried the remote control.  Ordered from John Lewis, delivered to local Waitrose. All worked out of the box. A nice piece of kit. We still have CD - Arcam Alpha & SE, NAD C340 and Dynaudio Audience 60 floorstanders now 14 years old. I did consider adding a streamer to this set up, but went for the Mu So after reading the reviews.

Have had my Muso set up and running since Thursday night. Some initial impressions…

Fit, finish and functionality are off the charts. It's a beautiful product, and also beautiful to use. Very high WAF. Very high pride of ownership.

Regarding the sound quality, this product has a gravitas and a weight to it's presentation of music that I haven't experienced from other products in the category. I find it exceptional with acoustic music, vocal jazz and similar. With more complex music, things do get a little more muddy, but this could also be related to my positioning of the unit (on a wall mounted shelf… 10 cm from the back of the unit to the wall… difficult to control resonances in these circumstances).

One thing that really jumps out at me with this product, relative to others in the category is the exceptionally non-fatiguing quality of the audio. I will concede that the unit could do a little better regarding mid range and high range sparkle (tone controls perhaps?), but there is a very analogue like quality to the sound that you could listen to all day without burning out.

Another unique aspect is the ability of the unit to throw sound. When I have the unit at about 50% max volume, it's not so loud that you can't be within 2-3 feet of the unit, but interestingly when you move 20 feet away, the volume level seems about the same… like the source of the audio is much closer. It's another neat trick that I've never experienced with another product from this category.

And another aspect that I also enjoy… as good as the Muso is, it also makes me appreciate just how special my 282/250/NDX is.

In JL Cambridge today and the mu-so display was much improved with some decent signage.  It wasn't turned on though...

For those who don't think the mu-so has enough power there's always the Phantom. 3000W!

Now that is really Qute. Front lounge for my birthday??? Watch out Naim.

Posted on: 16 December 2014 by PhilP

Apparently, it's possible to link 24 Phantoms together via wi-fi - 72,000W should be enough for anyone.  The sound quality is said to be excellent.
