The Mu-so has landed
Posted by: Steve J on 06 October 2014
John Lewis had one in the local store. They give a 2 year warranty so I couldn't resist. Very easy to set up with the Mu-so app, about two minutes. Initial impressions of SQ are good even from switch on.
I find it funny that JL has the Muso in stock and most dealers don't have a clue when they'll receive their first batch.
@ Super. Most people would get in touch with their dealer whenever they have an issue with their Naim gear. I wonder what sort of feedback we'll get from JL since i doubt, in spite of the renowned and excellent customer service background, they'll deal with some of these more efficiently than a "proper" dealer.
Time will tell.

That, my friends, is the color of money. Many Chinese manufacturers will insist upon half-paid orders up front, with the balance due prior to shipment. Retailers that can afford to prepay* for stock (* - in many instances–not making assumptions here) often get the first lot, which keeps the bankers happy and moves the wheel along.
On the other hand–if a major retailer will only accept full order lots, then it is often the case that a smaller retailer might see a one-sie or two-sie order fulfilled rather easily (one can keep fifty one-to-show, one-to-go retailers happy with a prepaid lot of 100 units, for example), when a full order cannot be fulfilled, nor shipped.
Absolute tosh dave sorry, UK retailer stock will be here very soon we fell foul of chinese holiday period just before shipping.
I ordered mine from John Lewis on Sunday and it arrived today, very quick. Seems to be working fine after the set up. For a quick try I put some music that I had on a 32g stick in mp3 format that I had in my ghetto blaster and it plays fine. However I put some music on another 32g usb stick in the wav format and the muso cannot read it. I tried the stick in the android media player and it plays fine here, can someone tell me why the muso won't play it ?
Stick needs to formatted fat or fat 32 which we support.

enjoy Dave, let us know what you think, best regards Paul
It will cost you 2 drinks....
Mine has just come home with me, minimal set up (very unlike Naim, and leaves me feeling slightly cheated the process was not more involving - but then again instant music!).
bought it on spec - and boy what a spec! Give it a little time to warm up and I am sure there will be a case for another one!
One question though - how do I get it to multiroom from my Uniti please?
It will cost you 2 drinks....
I'm sure that we can do better than the pride of Golden, CO for you.
Mrh, go uniti select whatever you wish to play, select this on app, you will see a square box on the uniti screen, click it you will see muso and party mode controls. Away you go.
hopefully got it right, works for me at home.
I really want one for my kitchen, but it's a little too big for my counter space. I'm hoping for a "mini" at some point.
Hi Paul
sorry cannot see the 'square box' - is this on the app or the uniti screen itself
I listened to a Mu-So today. John Lewis in High Wycombe has one on demo, albeit not really set up. (If anyone from Naim is reading this, for goodness sake get the rep to go and set it up properly, as plenty of your market will shop there. They've sold three already, and they can't even demo it! You need to spend some money, if you have it, on training sales staff, educating customers about Naim and presenting the product in a way that matches the competition from Sonos and Bose. Plus ideally you need a range, including a Mini Mu-So if you want to hang on to the shelf space. Just saying. If you want some input on mass retail, you know where I am.)
Anyway, via a 3.5mm jack I had with me it sounded very good; a little better than a B&W Zeppelin, which is the next best for me. Not much in it though, the Mu-So certainly wasn't in a class above for SQ for an extra £400, But for functionality (Radio, UPNP) and for perceived quality (just the feel of the thing, plus the cool interface) it was absolutely worth the extra. It's not enough to persuade me to replace my Zeppelin, but if I was in the market today I'd get a Mu-So without question or hesitation.

For us halfway across the globe, how is the SQ??
I had a listen to the Mu-So this afternoon at John Lewis in Swindon. First impressions were that it sounded a bit brash, with a nice tight bass. The salesman demonstrated by playing a few more MP3 tracks which sounded fine but (again ) they sounded a tad harsh to my ears. There was not much of any stereo effect from the unit, just a big open sound that certainly filled the large ( shop floor ) room. Here's the problem. It is too big for the kitchen as I have no suitable shelf space, in my bedroom I have a full sized hi fi system so it would be of no use there, in my living room the unit is too long to fit under the TV. So I ended up struggling to find a use for it and at £895 I decided not to buy at this point. I would be interested to find out how good the internet radio feature is, which might change my mind......
@Zeny
A large, busy, noisy store is not the best place to listen, and it wasn't run in . . . but here goes anyway.
The sound is not on a par with 'proper' hi-fi. A UQ with Q Concept 20 speakers at £1500 (versus £900 for the Mu-So) would wipe the floor with it. OK, that's an extra £600, but it's the otherwise bottom end for Naim. What I'm saying is: the Mu-So won't miraculously replace that, but in fairness it isn't intended to.
The sound has the shut-in, very slightly jangly quality of most all-in-ones, but it's tonally neutral and disperses well, and it goes plenty loud with no obvious distortion. The bass is how I like it - tight and musical rather than heavy - and there's a sweetness in the treble that I was surprised by. You can hear the different instruments up to a point. IMHO you could listen to this for a long time in great comfort and get lost in the music, and never really miss the better SQ of more a expensive system. For reference I was listening to Alt-J's An Awesome Wave and Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree.
For folks on this forum it will make an excellent second system with multi-room functionality, so it's a brilliant addition to your musical life that costs less than some people's digital cables. And it's beautifully built and aesthetically pleasing. I'd buy one.
For everyone else it might make a good main hi-fi. But to get to that point, Naim have a lot of work to do on their brand recognition, sales training and presentation, as the store clearly had no clue what it was or how to sell it..
@NIC NAP Agreed - it is quite BIG.

Fair point but to sell such a commodiy product from a non Hi-Fi specialist retailer you need to be able to demonstarte and sell them off the shelf.
A different game all together, ask Julian Richer he knows how to do it.

Mrh,yes the box will be on the app screen controlling the uniti, both uniti and mu-so are on the same network

solid, traning has begun and is continuing, surprised at your result not the same as I heard big differences in sq maybe it's the set up, anyway glad you like it.
sq it engages it's musical it will hit the spot but it's not separates And not separates price.
Well, after my initial enthusiasm when I bought it two days ago I have been having a very frustrating time over the last 24 hours. The Muso app keeps dropping out. The app keeps going to room search and saying no device found. It was like this last night then my wife managed to get it going this afternoon only for it to happen again this evening. My internet connection and wifi signal are excellent so I am at a loss to understand why the app and Muso, I'm tired of typing the hyphen, won't communicate. I had no problems like this with my Zeppelin so if I can't get this sorted it's going back this weekend. I just need a reliable music system for background music in the breakfast room, not something that needs constant attention.

Were any of these issues apparent when the mu-so was on demo at the HiFi Lounge BBQ back in July ?
Given these issues and those of MrH, perhaps JL isn't the best place to source at the moment ? Which would be a pity, because I have always liked JL and only today ordered a new dishwasher though them. And it was the place I went last week when evaluating cameras.
I don't think it has anything to do with where I bought it Don. There weren't any issues at the demo but they were just playing music via Bluetooth and I'm not sure the app was being used.
Steve, have you tried any of the support routes, naim or via the support numbers from our web site on the mu-so page, we would need to know all of your connection conditions, sounds like a network issue if the app cannot see the unit. In the mean time if you have not mailed Phil mail me exactly your set up and what is now happening and I will see what I can do. Guess you have done the usual, switched all off and re-started?
Will do Paul.

Ah! I wasn't suggesting there was anything wrong with the product samples supplied via JL, simply that JL might not be be best placed to provide after-sales support, especially with a new product. (but with Paul S active on the forum today......)
